New Research Synthesis

Prescribed Fire in Young Stands

This synthesis draws recommendations from four studies that are relevant to prescribed burning as a fuels reduction method in young stands. Most studies also looked at potential effects of mastication as a fuels treatment in comparison to prescribed burning.

Sign-on letter to support JFSP

The Joint Fire Science Program's (JFSP) future is yet again threatened with potential budget cuts for FY 2021. Please sign and share widely and thank you've already signed!

Last year, the funding levels went from $0 to $6 million through efforts like this; your support truly does matter in keeping funding for fire science research and outreach alive.  Once signatures are collected, this letter will be sent to Congressional Appropriation members.

Based on current budget proposals, the JFSP will be have a 50% reduction in budget from FY2019. We plan to deliver a sign-on letter to the Chairs and Ranking Members of the Senate and House Subcommittees for Appropriations for Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies expressing our collective support for the program. We need your signatures by FRIDAY 03/06/2020. Please consider whether you feel this merits your signature and/or broader distribution to others within your networks.

This sign-on letter is designed primarily for individual signatures. We ask that federal employees not use their official position or time to sign on to this letter; doing so could be considered a violation of the Hatch Act. If someone lists their federal position or email, we must delete them from the list. HOWEVER, federal employees who want to sign on as private citizens are welcome to if they list a personal email and use personal time to sign on. They are of course free to consult with their agency for guidance on this matter.

Forest land use and management strategies to deliver European climate and bio economy policies - relevance to California?

March 12, 2020
Davis, CA
Part of the Forest Ecology Random Lectures, open to the public.

A recent evaluation undertaken for the European Forest Institute asked how our current understanding of forest systems can help policy makers to balance the apparently competing demands on forest lands. This evaluation will be summarized along with comment on the associated and ongoing policy implementation. Relevance to California of the context and analysis undertaken in this study will be discussed. View Flyer PDF >

Tree Mortality Data Collection Network

March 10, 2020
McClellan, CA

The Tree Mortality Data Collection Network was established to bring together scientists and agencies who are conducting field and remote-sensing studies across the Sierra Nevada. In this third workshop we want to tackle the general question of "What now?". Feedback from previous editions of this meeting and recent outreach activities suggest the need to discuss two critical aspects linked to dead trees: 1) Fuel loads, temporal dynamics, flammability and risks; 2) Post-disturbance management: life after drought and death, reforestation and how to deal with tree species current and future needs. This workshop is organized to facilitate the presentation of recent findings via scientific talks and to serve as a  iscussion forum for future actions linked to management and policies.
