WELCOME TO OUR VIRTUAL EVENTS ISSUE!
Dear Readers,
Image Comics values the integral role that libraries play in providing free and open access to important, bestselling, award-winning stories for any and every reader. We stand by the many libraries, nationwide, that have chosen to shutter their branches in an effort to safeguard the health and well-being of their employees and the communities that they serve.
Here are a few ways we can support each other in the comics community during these trying times:
- Encourage your patrons to utilize your library’s digital lending platforms. Hoopla and Overdrive provide non-stop access to all the Image Comics titles they love, no travel required! And make sure you check out Hoopla's "Bonus Borrows" program for some excellent Image Comics deals!
- Check out the free first issues we offer on our website!
- Hosting a virtual book club and need discussion guides? Browse our Newsletter Archives here and here (our old list) for dozens of guides you can use for our hottest front and backlist titles or email us for anything not listed there and we'll craft one just for you. Lesson plans can also be found on the Diamond Bookshelf website.
- Reach out to publishers and creators about organizing virtual creator appearances that your patrons can access remotely. Samples of archived virtual chats hosted in conjunction with the ALA can be found on the GNCRT website and on the Image Comics Youtube page, along with lots more cool content you can share on your branch's social media site!
- Webcast your next book club meeting, tabletop gaming session, or comics lecture!
- Partner with your local comic shop. Give their social media/newsletters a signal boost to patrons so that they will stay informed of updates including: shop hours, events, and cleaning policy. Patrons should also inquire about mail-delivery subscription services so they never miss an issue!
- Stand with us in supporting the creators whose work is limitless and has the ability to transport us anywhere in the world—and beyond—from the comfort and safety of our homes.
Stay safe everyone!

SUMMARY: Izzy Tyburn has promised the world that if it won’t have her in it, it’ll have nothing of her at all. Chased by an unstoppable killer, she’s retreading her life, leaving nothing behind but burned rubber, ash, and the sun-scorched bones of those who get in her way. Ride shotgun on an existential road trip through the tangle of a blood-splattered life. Mad Max: Fury Road meets Neil Gaiman’s Sandman in this full-throttle, grindhouse fantasy epic!
“If you like DAN WATTERS’ work on Lucifer, this is even weirder…” —Neil Gaiman
“Wholly original. Fresh concepts and characters pop up on almost every page, courtesy of [DAN] WATTERS’ mind and DANI’s art. This is a series to keep your eye on.” —Entertainment Weekly
“It’s a gleeful of literary grindhouse comic that brings to mind Milligan’s Arthouse Pulp and notes of PRETTY DEADLY.” —Kieron Gillen
"Something that feels a little bit like the early days of Vertigo Comics laced with the sensibilities of Hunter S. Thompson. WATTERS’ script has a confident, poetic swagger while DANI unleashes page after page gorgeous art.” —Nerdist
“A damned joy.” —Warren Ellis
“I was reading a lot of ontological philosophy when we started out, which tries to reimagine the world from a non-anthropocentric point of view—which is literally impossible, but an interesting thought experiment. I thought it was pretty interesting to take that and backwards engineer it through a story—how much of yourself could you remove from the world and still be said to exist? There are a few characters in COFFIN BOUND who are going to try that in different ways.”—Dan Watters

SUMMARY: The Eisner-nominated, New York Times bestselling world of PRETTY DEADLY returns, for its third volume, this time to the sun-soaked strips of ‘30s-era Hollywood. Here, the best and brightest are dimmed and broken, and
the granddaughter of Sara Fields is found dead. Desperate to solve her murder, her heartbroken uncle calls on the Reaper of Vengeance to aid him.
“Grand and majestic storytelling.” —Warren Ellis
“Cherish it." —Kieron Gillen
“A masterpiece of mythopoeism." —N.K. Jemisin, NYT Book Review
“Pushes the boundaries of comics storytelling in the most wicked ways. I love it.” —Ed Brubaker
“Sergio Leone crossed with Neil Gaiman’s American Gods.” — Tor.com
“With PRETTY DEADLY, the reader is asked to work a little harder than with most comics. We try to lighten that load as much as possible. I kind of love the puzzling-out aspect, but we don't want it to feel like homework. We want it to feel like a fun, exciting puzzle... [A scholar] told me, "It reads like someone trying to explain death to a child." And in fact, this whole book had so much to do with my son... This story was so much about my trying to figure out how to parent and how to tell this boy about the world in a way that he can understand, but also make it clear that nothing is super simple. That's why the book is very personal for me.”—Kelly Sue DeConnick

LIBRARY SPOTLIGHT VIRTUAL EDITION
In this month's Library Spotlight, we're excited to share the fantastic work that the ALA GNCRT is doing to bring programming to libraries and their patrons from the comfort and safety of their own homes!
Put more social in your social distancing with #LibcomixOnline: Libraries & Creators Assemble!
"In the midst of cancelled conventions, closures, and many other rapid changes to the way libraries and library staff work, the Graphic Novels & Comics Round Table (GNCRT) is going virtual! The GNCRT will spotlight online comic reading and recommendations, resources and toolkits, and other #libcomix content virtually through #LibcomixOnline. These series of events and spotlighted resources will feature live streamed webinars, recorded interviews and discussions with some of our favorite comic creators, stores, and libraries plus virtual brainstorming sessions, and maybe even a few live draws or virtual art drops.
Join us for this #LibcomixOnline salon of ongoing events, and community partnership as we interview creators about their upcoming titles and highlight how we can support the comics and libraries and each other in these challenging times.
With new sessions every week, extending through May and beyond, these sessions will cover a variety of useful topics, fun interviews, and comics creator-led workshops! Registration links will be posted on the GNCRT #LibcomixOnline webpage as soon as they're available and sessions will be archived for future viewing.
Speaking of readers’ advisory—we’ve also taken our GNCRT Pop-Up Library Readers’ Advisory form online! Looking for your next great read (comix or beyond)? Fill out our #LibcomixRA form and get three personalized reading suggestions. #LibcomixRA will be dispensed by GNCRT members and more special guests.
The GNCRT is committed to professional development within librarianship and to public outreach and advocacy around comics, graphic novels and comics readership at all levels and for all ages. Comics are for everyone.
As more online events and sessions are added to the #LibcomixOnline slate you can get the latest news on schedules and events—including
registration links—at the Graphic Novels & Comics Round Table website and keep an eye on the GNCRT social media channels for updates about special guests and ways you can participate."
