Welcome to your first Sport Connector for 2020! This month we have a focus on participation.
We explore how to use gamification to increase engagement and participation in your sport, (gamification is the method of using video game concepts in recreational activities to make a new engaging activity), and we share the Sport and Active Recreation Organisations' (SARO) survey summary results. This gives a clear picture of the challenges in the sport and recreation sector for our region and provides insights on how Sport Wellington can offer support, build capability, and advocate on behalf of the sector.
If you have time, take a couple of minutes to view our highlight video from the Brendan Foot Supersite Round the Bays last month, a great example of mass participation, and lastly, our CEO Phil Gibbons is currently doing the Aotearoa Tour. See where he is in the live tracker linked in this newsletter.

Keep up with the play is a public awareness campaign targeted at those delivering youth sport, parents, coaches and administrators, to raise awareness of why we’re losing young people from sport and what can be done about it. The campaign launched on 25 February and is driven by the collective action and commitment by five of the largest participation sports in New Zealand (Rugby, Cricket, Football, Netball, and Hockey) with support from Sport NZ.
Sport Wellington will be meeting with sport leaders at a forum later this month to discuss how we can all take action to support youth sport. If you have any ideas on what you might like to do; we would love to hear from you.

While some sports struggle to find enough players for teams, the video game industry does not seem to have the same issue. So what is it video games do to entice participation that traditional sport could learn from? Sport Wellington's Community Coach Advisor Tim Mannix brings the concepts of video games on to the field, including adding elements like powerups, the ability to pause, and even change the "settings". Read the full article to see how you can apply some of these concepts to your next coaching session.
