Monday 9th March, 2020

Kia Ora Koutou,

We have been so very lucky with the wonderful weather of late, with many great days of sport and outdoor activities enjoyed by all children.  Year 5 and 6 had a fantastic time down at the KVC Sport Expo last week.  They all gave things a go with great commitment to try new things; and therefore growThe climbing wall was a real favourite! The seniors also led another great whole school games session on Friday, which again we had a beautifully sunny day for.  This will take place every fortnight and led by our wonderful Whānau Activity Leaders.

Water Bottles - We actively encourage regular drinking of water to keep hydrated - really important for the brain and learning.  We have a programme called 'drink to think' where children are asked to have their water bottle in the classroom and are regularly reminded to drink.  Please ensure your child has a named water bottle at school every day.

Hot Cross Buns - Tomorrow we start our Hot Cross buns fundraiser to raise money towards 'education outside the classroom'.  This helps to cover costs towards camps, swimming and transport to activities outside the classroom.  Thank you to those parents who have helped to organise this fundraiser.  Perfect timing to get in behind this and see how many buns we can sell! Orders need to be back please by March 20th, with a  delivery date here at school of April 7th.  Yum!

Interim Reports - Please keep an eye out in your email tomorrow for your child's Interim Report.  This report shares a self-assessment, teacher assessment and a comment on how your child has settled into Term 1.  Please note that children in Year 1 -3 who have a Learning Conference in weeks 7-9, or children who have IEPs (Individual Education Plan) meetings will take place of the Interim Report.

COVID-19 Update - You will be aware from the media of the COVID-19 presence in New Zealand.  We continue to follow advice from the Ministry of Health and Education:
- promoting effective hand-washing techniques
- reminding and putting in place routines that ensure everyone washes their hands regularly and thoroughly
- safe ways to cover a sneeze or cough
- avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- stay at home if unwell
- get adequate sleep and balanced nutrition to ensure a healthy immune system
- keeping up to date in regards to travel advice and advice on self-isolation upon return.
The Ministry of Health website  is updated regularly and is a reliable way of staying informed of current advice.  This page link also gives useful information on signs, symptoms, prevention and travelling advice.

Caregiver Information Session - A reminder we also have expert Anna Baker coming along to school on Tuesday March 31st from 7pm - 8pm.  Anna will run a caregiver session on how to support children who are overly anxious, or have anxiety and ways in which we can help our children have healthy ways in which to cope with stress.  There is a link in the advertisement for this further in the newsletter which you can click on to register.  Please note the session is free of charge.

Have a wonderful week everyone!

Active Transport to School

We encourage everyone to use Active Transport to school by walking or scootering.  There are many great reasons to walk or scooter, including:
- better health
- exercise also helps learning readiness and focus,
- less congestion of cars
- better for the environment
Even being dropped up, or picked up from the bottom of the street has daily health benefits and really reduces congestion up near the school, which in turn helps safety.  If children walk up or down the left hand foot path (when looked down from the school) there are no roads to cross until they get to Genelg Street.  Whānau could make a set spot to drop off / pick up, where your child knows to walk to meet you.
