A Lifetime of Service

The Center for Humanitarian Engagement (CHE) at Walla Walla University (WWU) has continued to respond to flood relief efforts around the Walla Walla Valley this week. Today, meetings with Walla Walla County Emergency Management Department will determine what the long-term recovery plan looks like. I would like to thank each and every one of you for your support over the last month.

Aside from leading efforts to serve in our community, the CHE also coaches and mentors students who volunteer and serve with other service clubs, groups, and organizations as well. Trevor Haugen, a pre-medicine, health sciences junior at WWU, leads the Buddy Club. In case you have not heard about it, take a few moments to read a little about what they do and how one of their volunteers is passionate about how their community service efforts are changing lives.

Buddy Club - Feature

Buddy Club is a student-led, volunteer club that was established 4 years ago. It works with the Walla Walla Disability Network by pairing Walla Walla University students with community members that are intellectually and developmentally disabled. The club’s goal is to bring awareness to and assist in eliminating the stigma associated with disabilities. Hosting fun events every other Friday throughout the school year, events range from pizza making, bowling, swimming, and more. Our members look forward to every activity and are continually blessed by the awareness raised through the relationships they build with others while simply having fun.

Zoe Grant, one of the volunteers from the Buddy Club shares the following: “For the longest time, I have been very passionate about mental health and reducing the stigma that surrounds the term “mental disability.” When I first heard about the Buddy Club, I was so excited to have finally found a program where I could help people and bring my passion to life. It sounded like the perfect opportunity not only to meet new people from school but also the community.”

Further, Zoe says that she not only loves the gaining of new friends, but that of giving by providing a friendship for someone else in need. “I signed up to join right away and hoped for the best. Excited for what participating in the club would be like, I knew I had made the right decision to join only after the first few meetings. The supervisors Trevor and Kayja are so warm, welcoming, and always make the biweekly outings so much fun.”

So far, since joining, the result in Zoe has been life-changing. “Not only are the activities fun and unifying, but the buddy system has honestly changed my outlook on life. After spending time with my buddy and seeing other students with their buddies, I have come to an important realization: I now realize that friendships come in all forms; It is important to have an open heart and mind when meeting new people, no matter who they are and what they are like. Thank you, Buddy Club, for changing my life and for making a positive difference in others!”

This past weekend, the CHE partnered with ASWWU Spiritual and ASWWU Outdoors to assist a couple of our neighbors on Old Milton Highway that had been severely damaged during the flood.
