1) Happy International Women's Day! Celebration at Trinity United Hall This Sunday Afternoon

On Sunday, March 8, 2020 the PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women hosts their annual International Women’s Day event. The theme of the event is “Like a Woman.”

To be “like a woman” is to celebrate women’s skills and resiliency and beauty. To be “like a woman” is to advocate for safety and justice and inclusion. The program will celebrate women with speakers representing many cultures and experiences in PEI. There will also be singing, music, dancing and movement led by diverse women. 2) International Women's Day...Because of You

Chairperson Debbie Langston shared these reflections for this year's International Women's Day. Look this weekend for her commentary on women's courage in local media and on our blog at peiacsw.wordpress.com.

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, I look to the beautiful mosaic of women that contribute to Island culture. In the fifteen years since I immigrated to PEI, the Island I now call home, I have witnessed a lot of change.

My mother single-handedly raised four strong black women. Because of her, I have been bold enough to use my voice as a leader in the community and as an advocate for others.

This year’s theme “Because of you,” gives us an opportunity to pause and reflect on the women, near and far, who have shaped us and inspire us to continue the tradition of strong Island women who extend the hand of friendship across cultures and encourage us to aspire to create a rich legacy -- a legacy where we build inclusive and vibrant communities; where women feel valued and respected, and where future generations can say “Because of you.”

9) Matues Revisited: Opening Reception

Wednesday, March 18, 2020
7pm-9pm
The Guild
111 Queen Street

Charlottetown

Matues Revisited is a collaboration of three Mi’kmaq porcupine quill artists, Melissa Peter Paul, Cheryl Simon and Kayla Sark, showcasing their individual artistic styles. Porcupine quill art is a traditional Mi’kmaq art form that utilizes an insertion technique to put quills into the bark.

Each artist will push the designs beyond the traditional form of quill boxes to include quilled sculpture, a study of the chevron design, and development of the bark as expression rather than just a medium. The exhibit will demonstrate the individual styles of each artist as well as a collaborative piece to embrace the traditional community component so prevalent in Mi’kmaq art. The collaboration itself is an expression of living Mi’kmaq quill traditions. (Source Facebook event)

12) The Government of PEI Takes Action re Breast Density Results

On January 15th, 2020, the government of PEI took action to help save lives by sharing breast density results with all women having a screening mammogram. The breast density category and associated risks are now included in the letter mailed to women after their screening mammogram.

Information about breast density is an important part of breast cancer screening and ensuring early detection and treatment.

Informing women directly of their breast density is important because:

1. women in the highest categories of breast density have an increased risk of breast cancer; high breast density is a more prevalent risk factor for breast cancer than family history

2. high breast density may make it more difficult for the radiologist to interpret the screening mammogram since both cancer and dense tissue appear white on a mammogram, creating a camouflage effect.

3. women with the highest categories of density are more likely to have interval cancers ( cancers found in between screenings) and these are later stage and more aggressive

By directly informing women of their breast density category, the PEI government has helped women with dense breasts better understand their breast cancer risk, thereby allowing women a chance to be proactive in reducing their risk and finding cancer earlier.

The goal is to find cancer earlier to improve mortality, as well as reduce the need for chemotherapy and aggressive surgery.

The more that women know about their breast cancer risk, the more they are empowered to manage their own health and have informed conversations with their health care provider.

The PEI government has taken key steps to ensure women have access to important information about their breast health.
