Artist Statement

I am a BC based renewable artist. I paint on vintage leather and denim. I am excited about sustainable fashion and I like to make art out of things that already exist, rather then to create something new. My show at the Britannia Art Gallery displays my passion for diverting objects out of the waste stream, and extending the life cycle of already used things.

Besides painting, I collaborate with another creative, Karlee McKenzie. Together we run The Hawks Project which is a collective pop up studio/shop. We travel around BC and set up pop up studio, encouraging audiences to join in on creation. Our mandate is to spread creativity while focusing on giving discarded items new life. The jewelry displayed in the gallery is made from a collaboration between Karlee and myself. I paint designs on leather swatches, rescued from damaged leather clothing, and Karlee then crafts these swatches in jewelry.

In 2019, The Hawks Project worked with Ocean Legacy Foundation in order to make a sculpture entirely out of sea trash that had been collected from the Pacific Northwest coastline. The idea of up-cycling and circular economy is at the very core of our art practice. Through sustainable, re-worked fashion and recycled installations we are trying to change the way society views garbage and pre-loved items. We look forward to more collaboration as well as getting other creative folks excited about the possibility of making art while reducing waste
