It's Advising Time Again!
In an effort to help advisors talk about the Common Academic Program (CAP), the CAP Leadership Team (CAPL) developed this resource that endeavors to answer some common questions about CAP.
As students prepare to register for classes, take a look at these conversation topics that may come up during advising.
CAP is a developmental approach to education at UD that strives to prepare students for the future by integrating knowledge beyond major areas of study and the classroom. It enhances their ability for critical thinking, creativity, oral and written communication, and teamwork. In a period in which the world is rapidly changing, CAP is central to a UD educational experience because it integrates knowledge, cultivates lifelong learning, and educates the whole person. Through CAP's comprehensive elements and goals, students achieve learning outcomes that would not be possible with non-integrated curriculum approaches.
CAP provides learning experiences for students that move beyond introductory courses in a variety of areas. It provides learning experiences that give students the breadth and depth they need in many areas to enhance the coursework in their major and to be successful in their pursuits after UD. CAP is not a "one-size-fits-all" approach to general education; instead, thoughtful selection of courses will stretch a student's mind to meet the needs of their future. Through CAP and their major, students will increase their mental flexibility and prepare for the ever-changing world around them.
Learn more about CAP

Recognizing the requirements of CAP, encourage students to:

1. Take courses that are intriguing and may cultivate or spark interest.
2. Pursue opportunities to learn with other students from across majors,
     departments, and units.
3. Seek courses that may fulfill both major and CAP requirements.
4. Consider courses that may enhance their passions and aspirations beyond
     their time at UD.

One Last Tip:

The CAP website and DegreeWorks are useful resources for advising conversations. The website can keep faculty informed when new courses are approved for CAP, and a student's individual DegreeWorks Audit will show how courses may satisfy CAP requirements for the specific major areas of study.
