Could you support a student and/or a Newly Qualified Nurse?

Grants of up to £7000 are now available to practices to host a final placement student nurse for 3 months and go on to support the Newly Qualified Nurse through a fellowship programme lasting 24 months.  Additional to the grant paid to practices, there is an offer to fully fund the Fundamentals of Practice Nursing course in year one and training budget of £1000 in year two.

Places are limited and applications will close 23 March 2020.  If all places are not filled, applications will be reopened at a later date.

For more details regarding hosting a student and/or employing a Newly Qualified Nurse, please contact amanda.bennett2@suffolk.nhs.uk

New funding is available to support students and newly qualified nurses within General Practice.

In order for your practice to get ready to host students, apprentices, or newly qualified staff it is recommended that nurses from all practices attend Practice Supervisor training. This will provide information around the new NMC standards that all nurses should be aware of, will be an excellent update to all existing mentors and will enable other registered staff to become supervisors. Improve your consultation and communication skills using Motivational Interviewing
The Training Hub are offering a unique opportunity for all members of the West Suffolk General Practice Clinical Teams (HCAs, APs, Nurses and Paramedics) to come together for a day of fun, laughter and learning.

Motivational Interviewing is a communication method used in clinical practice that empowers patients to utilise their own motivations for change, and promote independence of decision making. It also enables you to save your time and energy  and allows you to be more effective when it comes to people making decisions about themselves.

This course has run for several years and without exception evaluates as a stunning learning experience; limited free places available for West Suffolk Staff.

NICE, Skills for Care and other partners are holding an event on better medicines management in London on Thursday 19 March and one on reducing inequalities and improving lives for people with learning disabilities and complex needs in Leeds on Tuesday 31 March. These are part of the Quality Matters initiative to improve the quality of adult social care.

Weekly bulletin for NHS Leaders: 27 February 2020

COVID-19 – update

We’ve updated our website with new coronavirus pages, bringing our guidance for clinicians and other healthcare professionals into one place. It includes four standard operating procedures for primary care teams managing contact with patients who suspect they may have COVID-19. These cover general medical practice, dental care settings (including community dental services), community pharmacy and optical practice.

DHSC has updated the latest travel advice on gov.uk to include advice for those returning from Northern Italy, Iran and South Korea.

Weekly webinars are taking place for system leaders with Keith Willett at 11am and 4pm on Thursdays.

If you have any queries, please contact england.spocskh@nhs.net.

SNOMED CT now live
SNOMED CT, the national standard for clinical vocabulary used in electronic patient health records, has now been implemented across primary care in England. Mental health services must adopt SNOMED CT by April. Organisations should ensure they manage primary care data in SNOMED CT rather than via Read codes, which are no longer maintained and pose a significant risk in processing data. NHS Digital has developed an information leaflet on SNOMED CT, as well as education and training materials, animations, webinars and links.

Community Services and Ageing Well (CSAW) Improvement Community
Tuesday 10 March, London

This event will provide practical help with implementing enhanced health in care homes, urgent community response and anticipatory care. Aimed at health and care professionals, commissioners and others involved in improving community services, it will answer questions on key topics, including workforce and primary care networks. The CSAW Improvement Community is a network of over 800 people sharing expertise, experience and issues on community services. Email to become part of the Improvement Community.

Highlighting capacity issues

The capacity alerts demand management tool shows referrers where there are capacity issues in the system and where providers have available capacity. Part of the NHS e-Referral Service, it can ease pressure across systems struggling to meet waiting list commitments and support offers of choice to patients who have waited 26 weeks for care. To find out more at one of our masterclass sessions, email england.capacityalerts@nhs.net or visit our community of practice.

Using pulse oximeter probes safely

Our new video explains how providers should ensure staff have access to every type of oximeter probe they need, with clear point-of-use labels to distinguish between types. For example, a probe designed for the finger may give an incorrect reading if used on the ear and lead to serious harm. The video supports the Patient Safety Alert, Risk of harm from inappropriate placement of pulse oximeter probes. We ask providers to share it with staff to help reinforce the action they have taken to ensure availability of different types of oximeter probe.
