Paddling, Biking, Skiing and so Much More!

March 2020 Beaver Tales
President's Message

Wow, what an incredible winter!

March traditionally marks the end of our ski season, and it is fascinating to reflect on the season that was (and peek ahead to events yet to come).

Despite weather that can only be described as tumultuous, and a less-than-generous helping of snowfall, the groomers managed to work their magic and kept the trails in great condition.

This season started rather early, with our first day on skis being back in mid-November. Even with some closures around the new year, we have still managed to exceed 110 days of skiing. There have been plenty of seasons in the past where 80 to 90 ski days was the norm, but significant improvements to the trail base over the past few years have enabled us to stay open for skiing despite receiving less snow than before. And any year with more than 100 days of skiing is remarkable, particularly with warming temperatures and decreasing snowfalls.

We are now into maple-sugar season, and in addition to sweet treats, this typically means glorious spring skiing conditions. While we may not expect much fresh snow in the coming weeks, the remaining base will go through daily freeze/thaw cycles, generating fast and firm conditions in the early morning before giving over to slower and soft conditions as the temperature rises -- make sure to watch out for emerging rocks!  And for those adventurous souls who long to explore off-piste, there are sure to be some fantastic days of crust skiing, where the world is your oyster.

It is important to remember that spring conditions are inherently unpredictable, and that all skiing at the club, whether on trails or off, is done at your own risk.

As of March 15, we will consider the ski season "officially" over. The Burrow will no longer be regularly staffed, and the trails will only be groomed on an intermittent basis. Please check for any updates on the club's Facebook page.

This past month saw the Burrow and trails become a hive of activity. Ghislain, supported by an enthusiastic team of volunteers, put together another highly successful edition of the Georgian Nordic Team Sprints. Sunny weather and brilliant skiing conditions, plus a fun and challenging course, meant smiles on the 200+ faces that showed up. One highlight of the race was seeing the steep hill in the stadium climbed nearly 1,000 times over the course of the event. This race is fairly unique for the Ontario circuit and is really helping put GNOAC on the map!

It was great to see the new podium sign featured in the prize-giving ceremonies, and it also served as the backdrop as Christine conducted the draw for our big fundraising raffle. Huge thanks go out to the generous donors who supported the club by providing prizes. We also very much appreciate everyone who participated by either buying or selling tickets -- the funds raised will go a long way toward supporting youth activities at GNOAC.

Another big step forward was the installation of some comfy Muskoka chairs and a fire pit out on Panorama Point (near the far Lynx/Fox junction). Much appreciation to Greg, Don and Andrew, plus our friends at the Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve, for their collaboration in helping this become a reality. If you haven't already visited the spot, plan to make that a destination either this spring, during the summer or next fall. The scenery is fantastic!

The racing teams (both the junior racing team and the Racing Rabbits) capped off another successful season with a great showing at the Ontario Youth Championships in Timmins on March 7 and 8. The club was very well-represented, with more than a dozen skiers making the trip. Quite a few skiers achieved personal bests, including a number of top-10 results and even a few medals!

Earlier in the month, four racers also represented GNOAC and the Southern Ontario District at the Ontario Winter Games, skiing in blizzard conditions and benefiting from the amazing experience of participating in a large, multi-sport event.

One final reminder about the newly designed GNOAC apparel. The clothing is available to all club members and is a great way of showing your support for the activity centre. This is the last call for orders -- we will close orders off on March 23, and after that we won't be ordering again until sometime in the fall. To place an order, simply go to the online shop.

Thank you all for reading this far, and cross your fingers for a few more weeks of fantastic spring skiing conditions! Stay tuned for more updates and projects -- we are continuously working toward making improvements at the club for everyone. In the meantime, let’s all plan to enjoy the end of a fantastic season together.

See you on the trails!

Wil.

Please note that Ghislain will have a Racing Rabbit club set for team racers who are new or have not yet purchased their own jersey in which to race.

GNOAC Raffle 2020

Our first-ever fundraising raffle was a success! We held the raffle draw on Sunday March 1, 2020, during our Georgian Nordic Team Sprints race. All eight prizes were drawn and given to the respective winners.

I am happy to report that we were able to sell 995 raffle tickets and raised $4,000! Wow!

We have such a giving community. None of this would have been possible without your generous donations and support. On behalf of the Georgian Nordic Outdoor Activity Centre, I would like to sincerely thank all of the sponsors and prize donors.

The proceeds of this raffle will go towards both the Georgian Nordic skiing and Georgian Nordic paddling youth programs and other athlete development.

Hope to see you on the trails.

Sincerely,
Christine Anderson

New Muskoka Chairs and Fire Pits Installed
The GNOAC is benefiting from some great support from the Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve, as part of a larger FedNor project. With this support, the club purchased 10 Muskoka chairs and two fire pits.

The chairs are located around the back of the Burrow and on the Panorama Point trail; many of our members have already used and commented positively on them. Dave Anderson of Huckleberry’s was kind enough to source the chairs and fire pits for the GNOAC.

Thank you!

Trail Report

The trails were in excellent condition all through February, with all the ski, snowshoe and fat bike trails open and seeing heavy use. Members and visitors have been enjoying some of the best conditions we have had in quite a while. The Beaver has become a club favourite this year. Thanks to our trail team, we have been skiing since November 11.

As of now, the skate zones on the Partidge and Lynx are fast, and the track is icy and very poor. We have also closed several back trails.
In short, spring conditions are here: they're great for skate skiers, fat bikes and exploring.
Please note that the GNOAC Burrow will keep regular hours until March 15. After that, it will be weekends only until the end of March (from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m), all weather-dependent. Please check our website or call the Burrow for regular updates.

Georgian Nordic Ski Team Report
Junior Team

It's fair to say that this team has skied in all conditions. It has been another month full of good training and successful racing, with many personal bests.

The Georgian Nordic Team Sprints hosted an array of teams with lots of GN alumni teams made up of coaches, ski friends, mothers and daughters, fathers and sons and sisters and brothers, all skiing on the new Georgian Nordic sprint course.

We had two juniors and two Racing Rabbits attend the Ontario Winter Games with much success with their SOD district team.

Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 virus, Ski Nationals and the final O-Cup race of the season, at Nakkertok Nordic, were both cancelled, We had two junior-team skiers registered.

A note from coach Peter...

Coaching the Juniors

There are many books, courses, and symposiums on coaching and none cover the ages 13 to 17 very well. Basically, in sports, there is no script for this age group. Case studies, science theory and sport psychology are usually about younger kids or adults. This in-between age group is a mystery.

Really, the only long-term developmental path is to simply adapt to constant change to each individual's needs. Go with the flow, while at the same time challenging the athlete to connect their everyday thinking to their competitive behaviour. We are not there yet, nor will we ever be. It is about the trying. Perfection is desirable, but not attainable. I am okay with that.

Parents, just look your kid in the eye and tell them you love them for just being your kid.

Thank you, junior team.

-- Coach Peter Wiltmann

Two of our Georgian Nordic junior team members, Liam Marshall and Kate Redmond, will move on to postsecondary school. They have trained with, mentored and encouraged their teammates and shared their love of skiing with our Jackrabbits. Thank you and good luck!

Racing Rabbits

Wow, what a month for our Racing Rabbit team. Midland Ski Cross, Georgian Nordic Team Sprints, Ontario Youth Championships, Ontario Winter Games, and lots of fun, laughter, training and good skiing at practices for our non-racers.

Thank you to our coaches, Ghislain and Katarina, and to all the parents for getting your kids to practices and races! Georgian Nordic had many first-, second-, and third-place finishes and many personal bests in all events.

Please see BTK below for important dates.

Jackrabbits: That's a Wrap!

We had a great year of Jackrabbits, with over 100 kids and 35 coaches participating. Despite some weird weather, which slowed our start, each session for the balance of the winter was well attended.

Our program is unique in many ways, not least because of the active involvement of the high-school coaches, who bring an enthusiasm and mentorship to the young skiers that us older kids (adults) can’t always muster. We are truly appreciative of the smiles, words of encouragement, creativity and energy that these high-school youth bring -- thank you!

All the coaches give generously of their time and energy, often while juggling getting kids to Jackrabbits in the first place, so all are owed a big round of applause.

Behind the scenes, we’re lucky to have a well-supported program through Graham Poole’s continuous involvement.

Kathleen McGill and Robin MacDonald perform the daunting task of coordinating volunteers and stuff for the different activities, including weekly Burrow attendants and hot-chocolate makers. Kudos are also due to Don Brisbane and the grooming crew for getting the trails ready and providing a bit of extra attention to our play areas.

Basically, it takes a significant group effort to run this program, and we’re amazingly lucky to have the type of spirit our club generates.

For next year, I’m grateful to be joined by Chris Chambers and Cam MacDonald in my final year of running the program. They've also helped by pinch-hitting for me these past two weeks.

These two are remarkable elementary teachers, and I’m lucky to have found their support. If you’ve got ideas on how to improve or change what we do, we’re more than happy to hear from you. Please send an email to gnsccjackrabbit@gmail.com.

With that said, there's still skiing to be done in the remainder of the winter. Those early, crisp mornings mean that off-trail skiing is often supreme, and there is nothing like a good quality klister ski.

Take care and have a great spring, summer and fall.

-- Greg Mason

Finally, a special thanks to Kevin, our ever-smiling Burrow attendant, who spends the day welcoming skiers to the GNOAC and keeping the Burrow running and organized. He's also an expert on our trails, having skied over 500 kilometres this year. Congratulations, Kevin!

Georgian Nordic Paddling

February was a busy month. We started out by volunteering at the Knights of Columbus wild game dinner. The money raised will help community programs like ours. This was a great opportunity for our paddlers to give back.

The following week, we hosted our annual pancake breakfast at another successful event: the Seguin dog-sled mail run. We served 205 people -- and maybe even a few dogs. The money raised will help purchase new equipment and keep our membership costs affordable for all.

Georgian Nordic Paddling is excited to announce that we will have a new coach joining our team. Ayden Dermenjian is a welcome addition, and we look forward to our program options growing this summer, as we will introduce a weekly adult paddle. We will continue to offer weekly youth paddling, marathon canoe and even a little dragon boating.

Come and see us at the Leisure Fair, April 15, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the BOCC. Our list of programs and times will be available, as well as coaches to answer any of your questions.

Follow us on Facebook, and be sure to like our page.
