 From the President

What a fun time we had at our Paint-In!  It gave us a great start in getting ready for our booth at the Art Festival in April. We will be giving away a gift basket that includes a $50 gift card.  You must have your painted items turned in by March 15 to be eligible for the drawing.  By working together to make our booth attractive and inviting we will not only have a great fund raiser but also raise awareness of WTWS in the Lubbock community.  I encourage all of you to come to our
next Paint-In March 21.

I would like to introduce Betty Blevins.  Betty is an accomplished artist winning many awards and honors.  She serves on the WTWS board. She is an inspiration to all of us and is going to share her thoughts with us.

FROM BETTY:

Imitators of Creation
by Betty Blevins

It was time for art class in the first grade. The class was instructed to draw something important to them. Little Jimmy set right to work, as did most of the pupils.
The teacher went around looking at each students work. She asked Jimmy what he was drawing. He responded, “This is a picture of God.”
The teacher said, “But Jimmy, no one knows what God looks like.”
Jimmy said, “They will when I get through.”

People often compliment artists by saying, “You are so creative.” They mean well, but they miss the point. To create is, by definition, to make something from nothing. Only God can do that.

As artists we are all imitator's of God's creation. Whether it be nature, or people, or structures, or abstracts, it remains an idea we have borrowed from that which God made. All any of us do is take what He has created and record it, shape it, define it, or paint it in the way we think is best.

The challenge before us is to interpret what we see in a way that communicates the reality or the dream of Creation. At times that may be beautiful; at other times it may be thought-provoking. But it will always reflect the soul of the imitator...the artist.

So ask yourself, “What can I imitate with this painting?” Can I emphasize the shapes, or the colors, or the values, or the expressions, or some other captivating aspect of God's creation.

Decide it; do it. Happy imitating!

WTWS has received a $2000 grant from the Sybil B. Harrington Grant for the Arts administrated by the Community Foundation of West Texas.  This is the fourth year we have received grants from CFWTX.  The purpose of the grant is to provide 3 scholarship places to the annual WTWS workshop, in October, with David R. Smith. Applications are being taken from any Jr. High or High School art teacher teaching in Lubbock or Hale County schools. Needed workshop supplies as well as the 4 day tuition cost are provided at no cost to the winning applicants.

Established in 1981, The Community Foundation of West Texas is a regional philanthropic entity created by and for the people of Texas South Plains region.  The Community Foundation exists to improve quality of life in this region by helping area donors to give in ways that make an enduring impact on their community.  In 2019, the Community Foundation and its affiliates awarded more the $4.3 million in grants and scholarships, funding projects of hundreds of nonprofit organizations, schools and government agencies. The Watercolor Journey

David enjoys the challenge of working in harmony with a fluid medium.  By providing the proper environment, surrendering some control, and working with the medium, the most beautiful results oftentimes occur naturally.  To keep the paintings from getting too precise, and instead, to convey a feeling of aliveness, David utilizes a number of techniques such as working wet into wet, glazing, pouring, spattering, and spraying.  These techniques not only keep the painting fresh, but produce exciting intermingling s and textures effortlessly.

David’s favorite subjects tend to be found in nature and he loves to travel abroad as well as explore state and national parks for inspiration.  Depicting a subject in great light, capitalizing on the contrast developed by light and shadow, while showcasing the assortment of jewels that happen naturally through the fluid medium keeps David eager to paint his next creation.

David has studied under numerous instructors in the states and in China.  He has displayed his work in galleries and museums across the United States and his work has been awarded at the state and national level.  David has received Signature Membership with the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, and others.

MULESHOE ART ASSOCIATION
ANNUAL ART SHOW
From president, Aubrey Ann Johnson........We would like to invite one and all to enter our annual art show
Monday, April 6 - Friday 10, 2020.
We will accept entries from 9:00-2:00 at Aim Bank in Muleshoe

Aim Bank has been so generous with us in sharing their conference room for our show.....we keep banking hours.  Monday  April 6th, from  nine a m  to two o clock, we will take entries. The first 3 entries are $10.00 each and each entry after that is $5.00 each. There is no limit on the number of entries.

Carolyn Lindsey to be our judge. Carolyn is an instructor at Clovis Community College and we feel very fortunate that she will serve as our judge for the 2020 show. She will critique, judge, and chose the winners of the show. We will have judging at 12:30 pm, April 7th. In our previous shows we have had many entries from out of town: from Lubbock, Amarillo, Clovis, Portales, and surrounding areas.

Because of the distance the artists drive to enter, we moved our winners presentation to the morning of  Friday, April 10th. Artists will be allowed to pick up their entries at the conclusion of the presentation. I know some people probably would frown at the drive to Muleshoe, but we would appreciate the entries.   We have our "Leals" here that everyone loves to visit when they are in town.

Several of our members in our Muleshoe Art Association are also members of WTWS and would appreciate any entries
Thanks    Aubrey Ann Johnson, president
