COVID - 19: REASONABLE PRECAUTIONS

REASONABLE PRECAUTIONS AGAINST TRANSMISSION OF VIRAL ILLNESS
We are closely following information about the COVID-19 illness from the CDC and from our connections with Multi-Care. These are the precautions we feel it important to take:
If you are feeling sick, it makes sense to stay home for your own well-being and that of others. Please take good care of yourself and our community.
Passing the Peace – Numerous studies have shown that the most likely place of transmission of bacteria and viruses is hand-to-hand at the peace, not at communion. In our liturgies, we will practice a hands-free passing of the peace: a simple bow of the head with the words, “The peace of the Lord be with you.”
At Communion – All ministers of communion will carefully cleanse their hands before the Eucharistic Prayer and distribution of communion. If you prefer not to receive from the chalice for any reason, simply cross your arms over your chest. We will not be offering intinction (dipping the bread in the wine) by recipients or distributors of communion; germs may easily be transmitted from bread that has been in someone’s hand to the wine in the chalice.
Know that the Church has long understood that the fullness of Christ is present in both bread and wine; communion in one form is full communion in Christ.
We will continue to be attentive to recommendations from health officials and the office of the Bishop.

STATIONS OF THE CROSSFriday, March 13 and Friday, April 3, 6:00 p.m., Church
Walk the Stations of the Cross in community in this ancient Christian devotion, a spiritual pilgrimage contemplating the Passion of Christ. The Stations are a series of fourteen images on the walls of the church, fourteen moments in the journey of Jesus from his condemnation by Pilate to his crucifixion and death. We walk from station to station in procession, stopping at each for a short scripture passage, reflection and prayer. Each station invites us to share in the sufferings of Jesus and to awareness of his suffering today in the lives of the poor, the persecuted, the vulnerable among us.

HOW DO YOU LOVE? LOVE TOO LITTLE? LOVE THE WRONG THINGS? LOVE TOO MUCH? - Sunday, March 1, 12:15 to 1:00 p.m. in the Library. In her book Lent, Evelyn Underhill shares her view of the seven deadly sins, saying they are all about loving too little, loving the wrong things, and loving too much. At this Sunday class, Christ Church member and poet Lynn Martin will offer seven poems for reflection during Lent that will lead us to reflect on our loving and help our souls blossom at Easter.

LENT QUIET MORNING - Saturday, March 7, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in Trinity Chapel
Mother Janet Campbell leads this Quiet Morning that begins with Holy Eucharist in Trinity Chapel and is followed by three short presentations, each followed by ample time for prayer, writing in one’s journal, reflection, or walking the church grounds. SIGN UP FOR THE QUIET MORNING AT THE GLASS TABLE IN THE CHURCH FOYER.

THE GOSPEL OF JOHN AND OUR EXPERIENCE OF CHRIST I,  II and III - Sundays: March 15, 22, 29, 12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. in the Library. MONDAY BIBLE STUDY - 7:00 p.m. in the library. On March 2 we prepare for the readings of The Second Sunday in Lent, March 8. Join us in a lively discussion.

OUR LIFE CELEBRATING THE ARTS

LITURGICAL VISUAL ARTS

PETER BARSTOW ROCKWELL 1936 – 2020 - We note with sadness the death on February 6 of Peter Rockwell, marvelous and imaginative sculptor, whose marble “Holy Water Stoup” and bronze “Crucifix” mark the entrance to our worship space. Rockwell’s religious works reside in many places, including the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., Saint Paul’s Church in Rome and a convent in Chioggia, Italy. He is known for his deeply spiritual religious iconography: terra cottas, stone carvings and bronze work; as well as playful monsters, soaring acrobats, climbing sculptures. The Rockwell pieces at Christ Church, which also include a terra cotta “Head of Christ” not currently on display, were obtained for us by The Rev. Wilbur Charles Woodhams, former rector of Christ Church, who commissioned the “Holy Water Stoup.” Rockwell was the youngest son of noted American artist and illustrator Norman Rockwell.

THE CROWN OF THORNS – For many years, a great crown of thorns was suspended from the sanctuary ceiling at the beginning of Lent, replacing the Epiphany hanging of bright ribbons. This year, after a thoughtful conversation, the Worship Committee and Liturgical Visual Arts Group have decided to leave that space empty for Lent, reserving the crown of thorns for Holy Week. It will appear on Palm Sunday, when we first read the Passion, and remain through Good Friday.

MUSIC NOTES

TACOMA EARLY MUSIC PRESENTS - MUSING:  A collaborative treble choir concert, Saturday, February 29, 2020, 7:30 p.m. Anne Lyman and Leann Conley-Holcom have been talking for years about wanting to do more singing locally - specifically, challenging repertoire with a small group of excellent singers and minimal rehearsal time. This concert and project ensemble is the result of their dreaming and scheming about how to make this possible. Admission is free.

THIRD FRIDAYS AT NOON Concert: March 20, 2020 at 12:10 p.m.
Hear Naomi Shiga, Music Director, St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Tacoma play organ music by Pablo Bruna and Naomi Shiga, as well as J. S. Bach’s iconic Passacaglia.  Join us for 40 minutes of delightful music! Donation at the door.

March 15, 5 p.m.
Experience Evensong,
the sung Anglican office of Evening Prayer which combines elements of the Latin offices of Vespers and Compline, a liturgy more than 400 years old, structured by Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury, (1489-1556). As one of the Church of England’s unique contributions to Western civilization, this liturgy has inspired music from countless fine composers through the ages.  Though Evensong is a choral office originally intended to be sung by the choir, our practices have evolved. Now all assembled participate actively in musical expression of faith. Add your voice to our Great Choir.
Hear the Christ Church Choir sing 17th-century choral prayers of William Smith of Durham, the 19th-century Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis of Herbert Brewer (musician of Gloucester Cathedral), and Gabriel Fauré’s Agnus Dei, and the 20th-century The Pure in Heart by Patrick Hawes. Listen to comforting music for organ and violin as Carol Kutsch and Mark Brombaugh play music of J. S. Bach and Gabriel Fauré. Mother Campbell offers a reflection on the readings and season. Invite your friends to enjoy the liturgical riches of Christ Church with you!

KEY ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Saturday, February 22nd was a busy day with meetings for the Sacred Grounds Advisory Group in the morning and our Video Training Workshop in the afternoon.  Roxanne Hamilton presented her preliminary Sacred Grounds drawings to the group for input and comment.  We were extremely pleased with Roxanne’s conceptual design, which she has named, “Light of the World”.  Below is the design narrative she provided.

We will be sharing this preliminary design at all our Small Group Gatherings throughout the month of March and with the larger parish in April.
