Message for March, 2020

Dearest Fellow Pray-ers,

After listening to the news this morning with its endless talk about the virus, I turned off the radio and said to God "Father there must be a right and clear answer to this." Then I opened my e-mails and the first one I read was from a member of our Association with some research she had done on this situation. It is just inspiring, and with her permission I am sharing it with you all!  It is so relevant for our world at the present time, and I am making it the whole message for this month.  It comes with warm love and the certainty that the power of God is as present to heal now as it was in the accounts in this message.

This is the e-mail I received:

“In light of all the fear that is spreading through the world, it’s interesting to look back a hundred years to Christian Science and the huge pandemic that swept the world after WW1, from which up to 50 million people died and which, by all accounts (to material sense) was far, far more virulent than this present one.

The first place I learnt about the fearlessness of Christian Scientists back then was from the old WW1 black book in the RR titled ‘Christian Science War Time Experiences’.  The Sunday Times had described how medical researchers were digging up the remains of two bodies buried in the perma-frost somewhere in the far north of our planet who had died from the flu as they were expecting it to return. Unbelievable. So coming across these accounts was very encouraging. These are just a few:

These accounts were written in the rather dry manner of the day.  As well as so many healings and instances of protection, like whole ships untouched by the pandemic after the Christian Science Chaplain was alerted to one soldier on board being affected, I was reading about how Christian Scientists were helping out in military and civilian hospitals because the pandemic had taken such a toll on the medical staff, quite apart from the huge numbers of patients. Even when places were in quarantine, these volunteers were content to not be able to go home for weeks and (to medical thought) put themselves in danger, in order to help. There are many letters of appreciation from the medical staff. In the military camps, there were Christian Science Chaplains as well as Camp Welfare Workers who were there to pray for whoever wanted their help, as well as assisting in many other ways. Here below are a few snippets from 1918 plus a couple of links from JSH-online. (I understand the shared-view links can be read by non-subscribers in case you wanted to share them)

A few excerpts from the “WW1 Christian Science War Time Experiences”

“I am more than grateful for a healing of an attack of influenza, which took place last February. At that time I was located in a Marine camp at Galveston, Texas. It took considerable discretion to keep from being sent to the hospital for several weeks of confinement. This was avoided through the ever-ready helpfulness of the Camp Welfare Workers. They asked me to stay in their own home during the first afternoon I could get off from camp. I accepted their invitation and was at their home about the middle of the afternoon. By nine o’clock of that evening the perfect healing came and I walked back to camp knowing confidently that I was well.”       Fred R Brooks, Nardin, Okla

“„..In the meantime, I had been placed out on the porch where all the hopeless cases were cared for and was not expected to live. Through the kindness of the nurse, the Welfare Worker was allowed to come to my cot. Work was done and the healing was instantaneous.

In two days I was released from the hospital in a normal condition but was later placed in what was called the observation ward because the doctors could not understand how I had recovered so quickly.”                           Herman F Grant, LA California

“During the period when a number of the men in Vancouver Barracks, Washington, were under medical treatment, suffering because of the epidemic, I had listened to so much talk of the disease that I was caught napping, for I was not standing “porter at the door of thought”‚  and as a result there was evidenced the symptoms of the ‘flu in all its fury. I tried for two days to overcome it, but on the third day it seemed that a trip to the hospital was inevitable. I managed to get away from the tent and found a Camp Worker who talked with me for an hour and a half and made clear the thought that God gave man dominion over all error and therefore I was the master over any evil that tried to attack me, and he held this thought so firmly that I was suddenly freed from all discord and returned to camp rejoicing and slept well all night.”   August Brauns, Portland, Oregon

“Last fall, during the ‘flu epidemic, I became suddenly ill....The next day I was forcibly taken to the hospital and passed almost immediately into unconsciousness. The Welfare Worker was with me every day and several nights practically all night.
It was at a critical stage, when the army surgeon at the hospital said I could not live until a certain hour.....The Worker brought me back into sunshine and life again, staying constantly with me.
The case was considered a very peculiar one in the hospital, and the surgeon predicted all kinds of after effects, none of which developed, nor ever will, for this experience has shown me thoroughly what Science is and what it will do for one.”    William Huttig, Jr., Kansas City, Mo.

There are also hundreds of testimonies of it on JSH-online, but these are really interesting:

Signs of the Times
"Fear is the first thing to be overcome, the first step in conquering this epidemic," said Doctor Witte. "I am not a Christian Scientist, but I believe an application of their principles will materially aid in preserving the health of this community. They did not originate with the Christian Scientists, but are to be found by anyone who will take the trouble to read his Bible.”

The Bible tells us:
“Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. ...
…the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; ...
... The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”
(James 5:13 (to 1st .), 15 (to ;), 16 The)

This is a call to each one of us, - a call to action and a call to prayer!

With such love
