Marty's Message: Community Connections
The next time you see a young adult volunteering ask them if they are a student at UW-Stevens Point; I’ll bet the answer will be yes. Then ask their major and chances are they are earning a degree from a program in the College of Professional Studies.
Now, do the same with adults who hold many of our local volunteer leadership positions. You will see the same result. Whether it’s Pacelli Find You Be You (Terry Aittama), Portage County CAN (Annie Wetter), Central Rivers Farmshed (Jasia Steinmetz), CREATE Portage County (Lyna Matesi), Wisconsin/Nicaragua Partnership (Lynda Fernholz), National Stuttering Association Support Group (Charlie Osborne), Stevens Point Bicycle and Pedestrian Street Safety Commission (Trevor Roark), Stevens Point Area Convention & Visitors Bureau (Carie Winn), Lions Club (Erv Ziese), United Way of Portage County (Eva Donohoo), Aspirus Cardiac Rehab (Brian Krolczyk). The examples are many, and impressive.
Just last week, Michelle Shulfer led the student Health Care Organization and various community groups packing 115,00 meals during the Feed My Starving Children MobilePack, featured in today’s Monday message.
Pursuing and promoting “helping professions,” our College of Professional Studies students, faculty and staff are active volunteers in many venues, including service-learning based courses, professional student organizations, and elective community contributions. Together they support local groups and programs that enrich the lives of our neighbors and make Central Wisconsin an even better place to live.
