Experience Mexico’s history through sound with four works by Mexican composers. Marimbas (the national instrument of Guatemala), spirited winds, strings, and percussion form an audio stroll through history. Xochipilli, named after the Aztec god of art and beauty, is Aztec music as imagined by famed master composer Carlos Chávez. Silvestre Revueltas’ Ocho por Radio incorporates folk influences including mariachi. Rios: Papaloapan, written by Mexico's leading composer, Gabriela Ortiz, is inspired by the Papaloapan River, on the border between the states of Oaxaca and Veracruz.
And finally, Francisco Cortés-Álvarez’s recent work, Trascendiendo Muros (Transcending Walls), is meant serve as a bridge between the people of Mexico and the United States, inspired by the work of muralists on the Mexican side of existing border walls.
Audience members can take mini-tours of the new Mexico and Central America Gallery before the performance or during intermission.
