Why is open dance practice important?

Do you know what the most important parts of learning are?
In all my years of teaching, I find dancers who practice these 3 components of learning are among the most successful dancers, both socially and competitively. Think for a minute that learning to dance is like learning to drive a car. When learning to drive a car, you first take lessons from a qualified driving instructor, second, you practice driving on side streets and in parking lots, places less busy, then you go out on the highway and drive with many other drivers sometimes during rush hour and sometimes when the highway is less busy. In the case of ballroom dance, dancers too must take the lesson, practice in a more calming space, and third, get out there and dance with the other dancers or "drive with the other drivers" when there is more going on. This type of practice helps the dancers practice recalling materials in a different more busy arena.
Like in driving, the 3 parts to learning are:

1) Lessons:
Taking lessons from a dance educator who is trained not only in dance but how to teach dance. Educators who take time to study the art of teaching dance / movement have many ways of helping a student understand the material, these teachers know how to set up their classroom for better learning, and understand the correct material to teach at each level.

2) Self Practice:
Walking through material on your own with or without a dance partner is a must. Visualization of material is also important in self practice, visualizing material helps the mind to stay active and connect the patterns when we may not have time to physically get up and dance.

3) Social Dance Practice, this is like driving on a busy highway...
During social dance practice, dancers get a change to dance on a crowed dance floor, learn to trouble shoot dance material while working on recalling patterns, leads, and techniques when many other things are happening around them.

Happy and "safe" dancing!
