Dachshund registration statistics for 2019

Mini Smooth registrations of 8375 in 2019 saw a 20% increase over 2018. Their popularity has pushed them to the 7th most popular KC registered breed in the UK (up from No. 9 in 2018). Sadly, this also means more dogs are ending up in breed rescue.

The popularity of the Wires also continued to rise in 2019, with a 17% increase in registrations from 2018.

Guest blog post - how to stop your Dachshund barking at the front door

Richard Cross is Editor of TheDogClinic.com. He explains that Dachshunds are notorious for their barking, but desensitization and counter-conditioning training can have a big effect on their reactivity. If your dog often barks at the front door, try using the methods Richard describes to change negative triggers into a positive.

Latest Lafora Screening Trends

During 2019, 97% of all Mini Wire Dachshunds were safe from Lafora Disease, thanks to breeders making use of the available DNA test or using hereditary clear dogs in their breeding programmes.

In the Winter 2019 Quarter, only 2 litters were unsafe (at risk of containing Affected puppies) and 45 were safe. Our thanks to Mandy Dance (Chair of the Wirehaired Dachshund Club) for collating the results. You can see the 7-year trend below. Well done to everyone who has contributed to this success; not just the breeders but also those who have campaigned and raised funds to support Lafora research and the development of a DNA test.

A big shout out to:

The Red Foundation who have very generously donated £2000 to Dachshund Health UK to support our breed health improvement projects. A spokesperson for TRF said; "the trustees want to ensure we help with the longevity of the breed as it's part of our mission statement." You can read their 2019 Annual Report here.
