Main Announcements

COVID-19 Update

We are continuing to monitor the COVID-19 situation in Seattle. As was reiterated in the King County Health Department’s statement on Wednesday, schools are not advised to close when there have been no confirmed cases in the school community.  They are also advising that schools stay open if a non-symptomatic member of the community has come in contact with someone with COVID-19, but that person would be asked to self-quarantine. Should there be a confirmed case, we would likely close (collaborating with the Health Department) and institute our digital learning plan.  Most importantly, we will continue to follow the guidelines and recommendations of the CDC and King County Health Department. Please continue to be diligent with your children about hand-washing, proper sneezing and coughing techniques, and do not come to school if ill.

Here are some tips about what to say to your kids about the virus and outbreak:

1.  Kids are more afraid when they don't know the facts.

2. Deal with your own anxiety about the virus.  Kids will take your cues on how anxious they should feel.

3. Be developmentally appropriate.

4. Focus on what you and they are doing to stay safe and have good hygiene.

5. Be reassuring to them.

6. Stick to your routine but tell them possible closures are positive and not a sign of doom.

7. Keep talking and tell them you will update them when you learn more.

8.Print off this cartoon for them to read and learn about the virus (from NPR) HERE.

Staffing Updates

At the end of this year, we will say good-bye to longtime ASB staff member, Mary Patneaude.  Mary has done everything from classroom aide to playground, from Extended Care Director to Main Office.  We will miss Mary but are so excited for her to have time to spend in retirement with family and friends. We are also excited to welcome Ally Watson to the Main Office starting in the fall.  Ally will continue her role in Pre-K Extended Care in the afternoons, but will join Mr. Bollard from 8-12 each day in the Main Office.  We look forward to her smiling face welcoming you next year!

We also have exciting updates regarding our Pre-K and Kindergarten staff.  We have had the privilege of Mrs. Hawksford teaching Kindergarten at ASB for 20 years, and now we are excited to announce that she will be moving to Pre-K as the teacher of our second class.  Ms. O’Hare, currently one of our Kindergarten aides, will be our new Kindergarten teacher.   Ms. O’Hare came to us with a degree in Early Childhood from the University of Washington’s Education Department and as past preschool teacher.  Ms. O’Hare has been an aide with Ms. DiJulio and the two make a great team. Mrs. Beiter, will continue as an aide in Ms. O’Hare’s classroom, bringing another experienced member of the team’s expertise to our Kinder students.  We will be hiring a full-time aide for Pre-K and Kindergarten.

Principal for the Day

Our next Principal for the Day is next Thursday, March 12th.  Principals Joe Matter, Grant Salerno, and Ian Salerno have declared comfy free dress, donuts, and chocolate milk for all.  Our principals will also be collecting diapers and wipes for Sacred Heart Shelter. Please bring in diapers (preferably size 5/6) and wipes anytime next week!
