Edmonton Data Science Meetup

Edmonton Data Science meetup is a place to learn about data science and network with fellow Data Scientists. The presentations for the upcoming meetup include:

  • Feature-CAM: Interpretability in Image Classification with Improved Visual Attention - Frincy Clement (Multimedia Research Center - UofA)
  • Ethics in Artificial Narrow Intelligence - Nick Kalogirou (Co Founder @ Wybar)

Pizza will be provided before presentations and after presentations we will head to a pub for networking! The meetup is sponsored by AltaML (http://altaml.com/).

Abstracts:

Feature-CAM: Interpretability in Image Classification with Improved Visual Attention
Authors: Frincy Clement, Ji Yang, Dr. Irene Cheng
Deep Neural Networks has often been called as ‘the black box’ because of the complex, deep architecture and lack of transparency of the functionalities of inner layers. There is a lack of trust to use Artificial Intelligence in critical and high-precision fields such as security, finance, health and manufacturing industries. A lot of focused work has been done to provide interpretable models, capable of delivering meaningful insights on the thoughts and behavior of neural networks.
In our research, we compare the state-of-the-art methods in Activation-based method (ABM) for interpreting predictions of CNN models, specifically in the application of Image Classification. We then extend the same for eight CNN-based architectures to compare the differences in visualization and thus interpretability. We invented a novel technique Feature-CAM, which falls in the perturbation-activation combination, to create fine-grained class-discriminative visualizations. The resulting saliency maps from our experiments proved to be 3-4 times better human interpretable than the state-of-the-art in ABM while preserving their machine interpretability.

Ethics in Artificial Narrow Intelligence - Nick Kalogirou
We are still in the early days of determining what ethical practice looks like for the field of data science. There are numerous current examples of both benefits and harms of artificial narrow intelligence. As AI-enabled technology continues developing, ethics provides a lens to ask critical questions of both modeler and model. We have reached a scale of technology where the consequences of data science applications extend beyond the data scientist and the model and into the realm of society and the natural world. We explore a brief overview of who is working on AI ethics; the themes of work; where we are lacking development; and what to do about this continuous journey.

The Rise of Women in Tech Leadership

THE RISE OF WOMEN IN TECH LEADERSHIP PRESENTED BY GOOGLE CLOUD

Tech has a gender problem. For every four men working in tech, there’s just one woman. That disparity is even higher in executive roles, where women make up only 19 per cent of senior vice-presidents and 15 per cent of CEOs. This is a gap we simply can’t ignore – not just because gender diversity is the right thing to do, but because it has very real impact on employee engagement, talent acquisition, customer satisfaction, decision-making and even returns.

Here’s the good news: more creates more. More women in tech creates more benefits to organizations. Today’s women tech executives fight an uphill battle, but they also set an example and pave the way for the tomorrow’s tech leaders. That’s why it’s so important for us to come together to talk about our challenges, explore the impact we make and identify what we can do next to bridge those gaps.

If you’re an executive woman in tech looking to boost gender representation at your organization, this event is for you! Join us for a morning of an inspiring keynote, panel discussion and networking session sure to help you:

Learn how to guide your organization through change with courage, curiosity and confidence
Understand the hurdles your female employees are facing – and learn how to overcome them
Navigate (and change) processes and cultures that are exclusionary to women
Discover ways we can be better role models for future generations of talent

Transformations in Finance: Artificial Intelligence

How does artificial intelligence actually work? How will it impact my organization? Is it going to displace thousands of white collar workers, or empower them with analytical capabilities they never imagined? To answer these questions and more, CFA Society Calgary presents Transformations in Finance: Artificial Intelligence, an AI and fintech focused conference covering everything you need to know to effectively leverage AI in your business.

Taking place on April 2nd - 3rd, 2020 the conference will begin with a high level discussion of how AI algorithms actually work, followed by discussions on how these are being leveraged in the finance industry, along with what AI's current and potential pitfalls are.

Throughout the two days we will be covering the pros and cons of AI through presentations from international leading experts from various backgrounds. Formal breakout sessions will allow attendees to tailor their experience to better suit their needs and interests. In addition, we will be hosting a workshop on Python (the coding language that is predominantly used to build AI algorithms) with The Marquee Group. All of this will lead into a keynote panel, with Geoff Colvin (Fortune Magazine) moderating, which will feature our experts, Nicholas Thompson (WIRED Magazine), Brett King (Moven), Denise Shull (The ReThink Group & Market Mind Games), and Dee Smith ('World Bank on the Brink' series), discussing how AI will continue to transform the industry in the future. In addition to the schedule of formal sessions, there will be opportunities to network throughout the conference as well as during the evening reception on Thursday, April 2nd, at the National Music Centre.
