The Cutting Edge

When it comes to food insecurity, one of our most vulnerable populations is also one of our most important: children. In Forsyth County, nearly 22% of children are food insecure, and over half of the students in our school system qualify for free or reduced lunch. We know these numbers are too high, and we've got plans to fight for change.

The Food & Fellowship Initiative

SHARE's Food & Fellowship Initiative is all about ensuring that we're building a community that includes everyone--especially our children.

Once a month, SHARE will partner with local schools and faith communities to bring youth from throughout Winston-Salem into SHARE's community meeting space for food and fellowship. SHARE will provide a small dinner for all attendees, giving our young population a nutritious, free food alternative, while also creating an inclusive environment for intentional conversation and joy.

Most importantly, at each gathering, SHARE will invite a speaker to talk about their story and to provide leadership development, career advice and general support for this future generation of leaders and innovators. This monthly dinner will be a space where youth can learn from positive role models and from each other too; all while receiving the same fresh, healthy meals that SHARE will sell in its Harvest Market. Educating and empowering our youth is a key step in ensuring that the next generation is free from food insecurity. This is the purpose behind SHARE's action, and this is the future that we're working towards.

Sowing the Seeds of Cooperation
People don't like change. It's easy to be set in our ways and to continue with the habits we've always had. Of course, by opening our Harvest Market food cooperative, SHARE is proposing a big change to the food landscape in Winston-Salem.

We know it will take time for people to become accustomed to shopping at our store, and so we want to give everyone a taste of the co-op experience even before our grand opening. Consider it our appetizer before we serve our main course meal.

Announcing our Harvest "Pop Up" Markets

As spring rolls into Winston-Salem, so will a whole host of farmers and vendors. Every Saturday throughout April and May, SHARE will be hosting pop-up farmers markets in the West Salem Shopping Center on Peters Creek Parkway.

With these pop-up markets, we've got three big goals:
  1. Make good on our promise to serve healthy, affordable food to locals living in a food desert.
  2. Build relationships between the Winston-Salem community and the small-scale farmers who don't have a home at other Triad farmers markets.
  3. Provide an inviting atmosphere that recruits new Member-Owners and re-introduces our old ones to the Harvest Market space.
These pop-ups markets won't only be about food, they'll be about fun too. Along with our farmers, SHARE is also inviting various vendors and food trucks to join our Saturday gatherings. That means we'll have all your staple grocery needs, from fruits to vegetables to eggs to meat, but we'll also have hot food and local craftsmen selling their goods too.

Ultimately, building inclusive community means inviting everyone to find their place in our space, and we're excited to practice that mission with our pop-up markets!

How To Be An Antiracist

My society has racism.  The most serious stage. Racism is likely to kill my society. My society can survive racism against all odds.  I prepared myself to fight. I looked past what could harm me in the fight to see all that could bring me joy if I survived…

Kendi, Ibram. (2019). How to Be an Antiracist. New York: One World, page 235

Every war has skirmishes… The places where the fight plays out.  I fight in the trenches, through SHARE, to mitigate food insecurity. Food insecurity is a grave problem in our community; it robs the strength of a cluster of folks who could help make our community better… I don’t solicit your charity; I solicit your fighting spirt, to help make our community inclusive and workable for everybody.

I invite you to be a part of SHARE, as we fight the good fight for joy.
