2 March 2020
Dear Families,
This week marks the first full week of Lent. This week we have a reading from the Book of Esther, the Persian queen who saved her people, marking the feast of Purim. Esther, an orphan, a beauty, had been hiding her heritage, but found that she had to beg God for strength and then the king for the deliverance of the Jews. She had such courage and vision – bold vision, we might say. It is bold vision that also marked the work of Catherine McAuley, the founder of the Sisters of Mercy. And we all hope to have bold vision as we navigate our complicated world. Esther and Catherine can inspire us, both women of faith, both with the kind of vision that made a difference.

This is Sophomore Unity Week, and the sophomore class has been busy planning their activities.
- Monday: “Show Your Mercy” day, features a fund-raiser for the Mercy Girl Effect, with all students allowed to be out of uniform, following the guidelines, and having already donated money to the Mercy Girl Effect.
- Tuesday: Irish-themed bake sale, with proceeds also going to the Mercy Girl Effect.
- Wednesday: Sophomore Emmaus. Through games and small and large group discussions, the sophomores will spend the day discussing things that unite rather than divide us. They will meet Beth Puleo, a young woman who lives a fulfilling life despite disabilities, and learn from her the importance of perseverance and the power of prayer.
- Thursday: Pin Ceremony at 2:20
- Friday: Sophomores can wear casual clothing, including sweatpants. They will have a movie and games in the gym during lunch. And of course, their Pin Dance will be on Friday evening in the Dining Hall.

As part of her service hours, Kayla Taylor ’21 created three acrylic paintings: a polar bear, a penguin, and a walrus, which were displayed by the kindergarten teachers of Youth's Benefit Elementary School (YBES) during their Learn with Me Day. The YBES students were able to have their picture taken with Kayla’s creations, and these were a bit hit!

- Meet at Mercy on Sunday, March 15 by 11:30 am in full uniform. We will transport everyone to the beginning of the parade route by school bus and minibus.
- Please bring a sandwich and drinks and dessert will be provided.
- Once the parade is over, everyone will be transported back to Mercy. The estimated time of arrival back to Mercy is 4:00 pm.
Any students who participate in the parade can come to school on March 17 out of uniform. Pizza will also be supplied at lunch for everyone who participated on Tuesday.

Please join us on Wednesday, March 4th, for Mercy High School’s third annual Service Fair, at which the Junior class will be showcasing their Service Learning Projects. The class of 2021 has served a diverse range of populations at varying non-profit agencies within the greater Baltimore community, and they are excited to share their experiences! We hope you will join us to celebrate their commitment to service and their dedication to walking in the compassionate footsteps of Catherine McAuley and the Sisters of Mercy.
The fair will take place from 2:20-3:10 on March 4th. The student body will move throughout the fair with their advisers, and we invite you to join our celebration of service to see how Mercy girls are leaving a positive impact on our community.

Finally . . .
We want our Mercy Girls to make a difference in the world. Like Queen Esther and the Venerable Catherine McAuley, we encourage them to have bold vision. This week is one of those weeks in which our programming, from Sophomore Unity Week to HerStory and the celebration of service in the Service Fair, helps our girls lean into their future selves, transitioning into Women of Mercy from the Mercy Girls they are now. We hope they have a great week!
Sincerely yours,
Jeanne A. Blakeslee
Principal
