Chicago Master Singers Names John C. Hughes its Next Music Director

Chicago Master Singers announced the appointment of its next Music Director. Dr. John C. Hughes has been chosen to lead the chorus following Alan Heatherington’s retirement this July. He will be only the third Music Director in Chicago Master Singers’ 41-year history.
Dr. Hughes is currently Assistant Professor of Music, Director of Choral Activities and Chair of the Department of Music at Ripon College in Wisconsin. He also conducts the Green Lake Festival of Music’s Composer Residency where he has collaborated with composers Ola Gjeilo (2018), Shawn Kirchner (2019) and Elaine Hagenberg (upcoming in 2020). Dr. Hughes earned his doctorate in choral conducting and pedagogy from the University of Iowa in 2014.
Several CMS singers have worked with Dr. Hughes at the Green Lake Festival and at a CMS-sponsored workshop on choral intonation last June. “Dr. Hughes was chosen from a field of very strong candidates,” said CMS president Sue Umbdenstock. “His conducting, programming and teaching abilities make him an excellent fit for Chicago Master Singers. I am confident that we will continue to flourish under his direction, and we are delighted to welcome him into the CMS family.”
Dr. Hughes will relocate to the Chicago area this summer with his wife Mandy and their six-year-old daughter Ellie. Mandy will begin a new job as Assistant Principal for Student Services at Fremd High School in Palatine in July. Hughes says, “It is truly an honor to succeed Maestro Heatherington in leading the Chicago Master Singers. I have long admired the very high artistic standards with which CMS performs. In all my interactions with the organization, I have been impressed by its professionalism and am looking forward to many years of music-making ahead.”
News of next season’s concerts will be announced this spring.
