Exploratory Meeting at Dixie Brewery
The Strategic Neighborhood Development Team at the New Orleans Business Alliance held an Exploratory Meeting at Dixie Brewery on February 1, 2020. More than 60 residents of New Orleans East met with the Strategic Neighborhood Development (SND) Team to discuss opportunities and plan for the future. The SND Team presented efforts underway to establish New Orleans East as a development-ready community in partnership with Louisiana Economic Development (LED). The Team also presented Buxton data analysis, which shows that $279,712,949 leaves New Orleans East every year to buy goods and services in other places. Residents received an update on Councilmember Cyndi Nguyen's efforts to fully constitute the board for the New Orleans East Regional Business Park.
State Representative Jason Hughes summed up the day this way, "l must admit, many residents were a bit skeptical going into today's meeting. However, I think just about everyone left excited about next steps and the future of our beloved community. you all did something today that doesn't happen often – you all took time to authentically LISTEN and didn't attempt to talk over residents or dismiss their ideas, concerns, and even frustrations. You all also laid out a clear timeline and path forward which is commendable. Most importantly, you all committed to developing a plan that will largely be driven by residents."
The SND Team will be following up on the Development Ready Community Process along with other initiatives in the coming weeks.

New Orleans City Council
Council Meeting News Summary - March 5, 2020
Approval of New Cosmetology School in New Orleans East Marks First Since Hurricane Katrina
The Council passed Zoning Docket 9/20 requesting a conditional use to permit an educational facility for a cosmetology school in the Little Woods neighborhoods, close to the intersection between Morrison Road and Crowder Boulevard. The approved Cosmetology Institute will become the first cosmetology school in New Orleans East since Hurricane Katrina.
The CPC recommended approval of the initiative citing the need for greater educational and vocational services in the area. The new school will have a positive impact on the surrounding community with little to no adverse effects on nearby residential properties. Per the CPC findings, all activities will be contained with the existing building, and associated traffic will solely affect Morrison Boulevard rather than the surrounding residential street network.
