YellowBridge makes a new friend
|
|
Each year, the Toowoomba Friendlies Pharmacy in Mylne Street choose a community group to raise money for. And this year, they chose us! We are extremely grateful to be the recipients of their enthusiasm and good will.
Over the next 12 months, Friendlies' staff will host fundraisers with all proceeds donated to YellowBridge.
They will also don our unique 'We find the joy' yellow tee shirts and wear them in-store every Friday to promote the partnership (as pictured).
In return, our staff will run pop-up information sessions at Friendlies' pharmacy to help their older customers learn more about the range of senior services including yard maintenance, home modifications and in-home care.
"It makes our staff very proud to be able to give back to our local community, especially to any organisation like YellowBridge that does so much for many people like our senior customer," Friendlies Pharmacy in Charge Victoria Schultz said.

Free seniors events
Our Banter Regional Roadshow is underway.
Over the next 10 weeks, we will host 15 free events across nine townships for seniors over 60 years. The free events include gentle yoga, painting and flower arranging. They are a great opportunity to learn something new, enjoy a social outing and meet new friends. The towns we'll be visiting are Clifton, Millmerran, Oakey, Bell, Highfields, Crows Nest, Yarraman, Gatton and Pittsworth. New opening hours
Our boutique op shop, Collectables, is now open six days a week.
We are excited to be able to provide expanded shop opening times for our customers and shop assistants. This means more time to shop for you, and more chance of receiving skills and training for our clients with a disability who work in the shop. Please pop in to 2 Station Street to browse our treasures.
Monday - Friday 9am to 3pm
Saturday - 9am to 1pm

Grant for home mods
YellowBridge has secured an additional $88,000 to fund home modifications for seniors.
The grant under the Commonwealth Home Services Growth Program is great news for seniors who need to modify their homes to keep safe and live independently. The demand for modifications continues to grow and is a significant part of our Home Services program. For more information, or to check your eligibility, phone us on 1300 882 764.

Making progress
Our purpose-built three-bedroom disability unit is taking shape.
The unit, funded by a $450,000 grant from Hand Heart Pocket the Charity of Freemasons Queensland, is on track to be completed in April. It is part of a boutique complex of four units in Centenary Heights that will provide purpose-built housing for people with a disability. The construction is being managed by Enabled Living.

No slowing down
George is a bit of a legend in our lawn mowing team.
He recently turned 80 but he still loves his job mowing lawns and helping to keep our clients' yard looking their best. He could retire, and did try it once, but he likes what he does too much. We are pleased because we love having him as part of our hard working lawn mowing team. Happy birthday George!

New outdoor services
Good news for clients who are eligible for these services.

Hairy for a cause
One thing we love about our staff is their big hearts.
We are so proud of Housing Services Program Manager Stuart Moar for getting hairy to help our young people who live at The Haven. Homelessness amongst youth is a growing issue and every bit of awareness, funding and support will help. If you can spare a little change to help him reach his $1500 fundraising target, you can donate online here

Penny Hamilton, Chief Executive
The Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability is underway and we hope it leads to important reforms and improvements to protect some of our most vulnerable fellow citizens.

In April 2019, the Australian Government established The Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability. It was by no means a new idea. Advocates have been calling for a Disability Royal Commission for decades giving people with a disability the right to a stand-alone and targeted Royal Commission that will interrogate and address the full scope of violence, abuse and neglect of people with disability. It is one of the most significant Royal Commissions ever held in Australia with seven Commissioners appointed, four advocates,105 staff and an allocated budget of $520 million.
This Royal Commission is an important opportunity for people with disability, their families and carers. It will enable them to tell their stories and experiences in all settings and contexts such as the home, schools, out-of-home care, the justice system, as well as in the disability support system. By doing so they can inform its recommendations about how society can better ensure people with disability are treated with respect and dignity and that they live free from violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation.
YellowBridge welcomes the Royal Commission. This is a vital inquiry pursuing transformational change that people with disability rightly expect. We believe that everyone deserves respect and the opportunity to live the life they choose.
YellowBridge is committed to supporting the Royal Commission’s enquiry process in whatever way we can, including continuing to support our clients, their families, workers and volunteers and seek to empower them so their voices can be heard. We are also committed to making a positive contribution towards the outcomes of the Royal Commission through the experience and knowledge we have in this area.
The Disability Royal Commission needs to be the start of the significant changes that are needed to provide a better future for people with a disability. We look forward to continuing to contribute to the Royal Commission’s inquiry and learn from its findings and recommendations in due course.
