Penalties For Distractions - From 1 July this year, drivers caught holding or touching their phone to make a voice call will receive an increased penalty of a $500 infringement and three demerit points. A higher penalty of a $1,000 infringement and four demerit points will apply to drivers who create a text, watch a video, use video chat, use their navigation app while driving, functions that can result in a high level of driver distraction. Last year saw a 48% increase in the number of people killed in inattention-related crashes on WA roads compared to the previous five-year average.Taking your eyes off the road for just two seconds at 60km/h, is the same as driving 33 metres while blindfolded, while at 100km/h, you’ll be driving blindfolded for 55 metres.Visit the Road Safety Commission's Your Safety pages for more information about driver distraction.

'False billing is on the rise, with nearly $10 million in financial losses reported in 2019 alone'
What is false billing? False billing scams request you or your business to pay fake invoices for directory listings, advertising, domain name renewals or office supplies that you did not order. Protecting yourself from false billing
•    If you notice a supplier’s usual bank account details have changed, call them to confirm.
•    Always check that goods or services were both ordered and delivered before paying an invoice.
•    Never agree to any business proposal on the phone.
•  Always get proof of directory entries before paying anything and never pay for an entry or advertisement you didn’t authorise.
•    If you are happy with your current domain name registration provider, simply ignore any other ‘renewal’ or ‘registration’ letters that you may receive from a different company.
•    Immediately cut contact with scammers who attempt to bully or intimidate you.
To find out more about false billing and how you can protect yourself, visit the scamwatch website.
Watch a short clip about this scam from Channel Seven News and Perth Now.

GRANTS FOR MARCH and APRIL 2020

NOT-FOR-PROFIT LAW
Working with Children Check Organisation Obligations
The Working with Children (WWC) Check is a compulsory screening strategy for people who engage in certain paid or unpaid work with children, described as ‘child-related work’ under the Working with Children (Criminal Record Checking) Act 2004 (WWC Act). The Department of Communities administers the WWC Check in Western Australia. If you are an organisation, that has employees, volunteers or students who carry out ‘child-related work’ in WA, then you have responsibilities to ensure that they obtain WWC Checks. As an employer, you must ensure that all your employees, volunteers and students who undertake child-related work, have either applied for, or hold, a current WWC Card and that they renew their Card every three years. You can check the validity of a WWC Card on the WWC Check website. If an individual has been issued with an Interim Negative Notice or Negative Notice, they are prohibited from engaging in any child-related work. Keep information that demonstrates you comply with the WWC Act and be prepared to supply this information to the WWC Screening Unit if asked. If you suspect that an employee, volunteer or student has been charged or convicted with an offence which makes it inappropriate for them to carry out child-related work, the WWC Act allows you to contribute to child safety by notifying the WWC Screening Unit, which runs regular free training for employers to learn more about WWC Check responsibilities and child safety.More information about the WWC Check and upcoming events can be found on the WWC Check website. Visit the website

Aon's Insurance Puzzle Solver - The NFP Insurance Doctor

What is the Insurance Puzzle Solver? It's an online tool created for volunteer involving organisations and other NFPs, helping you choose and apply for relevant insurance cover and ensure that your organisation's insurance health is up to scratch.

RESOURCES

Health & Disability Services Complaints - Resources for Young People
Complaints about health and disability services involving children and young people are often made by their parents, who have the responsibility for their health care in their early years. In recognition that young people transition to a stage in their life when they take responsibility for their own health care and may visit a doctor or other health service provider on their own, the Health and Disability Services Complaints Office has developed youth specific resources for young people. Download resources

THE TAKEAWAY: Men and women are socially conditioned to occupy different roles. They face different expectations and challenges. These biases are often subtle or invisible. Often, they’re not intentional or malicious. Regardless, treating all people equally does not necessarily result in equal outcomes. In order to be fair, your organisation must be prepared to treat men and women differently; to remove barriers and to encourage inclusion. You can start this process by applying a “gender lens” to your activities. How Do I Apply For Grants Without A Gender Bias?
