INDIAN CLASSICAL NIGHT WITH A NORTH LONDON TWIST
with YOUSUF ALI KHAN, JONATHAN MAYER AND PAUL CLARVIS

at Karamel - Wednesday 11 March, 8pm

We bring together 3 renowned musicians to perform an Indian Classical night at Karamel.

YOUSUF ALI KHAN - Highly valued and influential core member of the Grand Union Orchestra for 25 years. Born into a famous dynasty of Bengali musicians and a pupil of the renowned master Ali Akbar Khan, Yousuf began playing tabla at the age of five, later studying in Kolkata. He is now an internationally-acclaimed performer and accompanist of choice for Bangladeshi and Indian musicians visiting the UK.

JONATHAN MAYER  "one of the most versatile and sort-after sitarists in the world."

PAUL CLARVIS - Needs no introduction in the UK Jazz scene. Playing drums since childhood, Clarvis played jazz and rock while at school and performed with the National Youth Orchestra. After two years at the Royal College of Music he became a full-time musician and he continued playing jazz, however, his interests also turned to folk and world music which he incorporates these styles within his gigs. He has a particular interest in Indian Classical tabla and the intricacies of the rhythm and style.

Yousuf Ali Khan (tabla) is joined by Jonathan Mayer (sitar) and Paul Clarvis (tabla).

TORUS AT KARAMEL
at Karamel - Thursday 12 March, 8pm

Pictured: TORUS in full flight (2011) at POSK (Polish Cultural Centre) in Hammersmith.
..... TORUS really capture the spirit of that confident new wave of the 70s and 80s with tunes from Steps (Don Grolnick, Mike Mainieri, Michael Brecker), Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett and Weather Report.....”

Passionate and charismatic saxophonist Gary Plumley astounds with soaring, high energy pyrotechnics. Currently at the top of his game there's no holding him. (You may also hear Gary round town from time to time with Sax Appeal or Snowboy and the Latin Section.

Jonathan Gee is "One of the most celebrated musicians in European jazz. His music is precise, lucid and original, and at times breathtakingly lyrical." (Visions of Britain.)

Trevor Taylor and Mick Sexton make up the back line with a combination thoughtful, light touched swinging jazz through to high energy Latin grooves as the occasion demands.

Doors open 7pm, music from 8pm.

TOMORROW's WARRIORS presents QUEEN COLOBUS
Karamel, Thursday 26 March, 8pm

Queen Colobus is a 4-piece band led by alto saxophonist and vocalist, Beth Hopkins. Having played together in different bands in Southampton, they found that they liked making weird sounds at each other, with or without instruments, and formed a musical alliance within the London jazz scene. Their music is influenced by jazz, indie and neo-soul. Beth’s compositions are fuelled by frustration at the things that aren’t generally talked about in music such as the diet industry, having no voice and mental health issues. The name comes from a species of Old World monkey, which reflects their wise and playful nature.
