Becoming Like Christ: A Class on What it Means to Follow Christ
By Jenni Chilton

For the past five weeks, Kendall Ellis and I have been teaching an affirmation of faith class to the 4th-6th graders during the Sunday School hour. We have talked about what it means to follow Jesus, the meaning and importance of discipleship, community, believer’s baptism, the Lord’s Supper and serving the church as well as growing individually in one’s walk with Christ.

Our aim has been to introduce the students in the 4th- 6th grade Sunday School class at Calvary to the overarching Scriptural narrative of God’s work of redemption throughout history through His Son, Jesus Christ. After reflecting on how Jesus is the fulfillment of God's promises from the Old Testament prophecy and how Jesus shows us what God is like (week 1), we reviewed the events of Holy Week leading up to Jesus’ death and resurrection (week 2). Through knowing Jesus and examining His actions, we discovered that Jesus reveals what God’s love is like to us (servant-hearted, humble, willing to sacrifice His very life for us). We then talked about what it means to choose to follow Jesus as one’s Lord and savior—declaring that Jesus is master or owner of one’s life and that a person is choosing to follow Him the rest of his/her life (week 3). In our last two lessons, we discussed what it means for Christians to follow Christ’s commands to be baptized and to remember His sacrifice for our sins on the cross through taking communion (week 4) as well as how we can live in such a way that God is glorified by ministering in and alongside the church and growing in our individual walks with Christ (week 5).

Throughout this class, the 4th-6th graders have been so engaged and had really great questions and comments! I truly believe that this is one of the most formational ages of a person’s life and, if you have young kids in your life, I would highly encourage you to begin or continue these conversations with them outside of church. Continue talking with the children in your life about what they have learned at church and encourage them to make connections between church-learning and their own, everyday lives. Even something as simple as asking “what did you learn today at church that stood out to you/that you had never thought about before?” instead of “did you have fun?” is a great start to having deep, thought-provoking discussions about matters of faith!

For those interested in talking with kids about following Christ, below you’ll find a few follow-up questions to continue (or begin!) having a discussion with the kids in your life about faith and baptism:
  • What are some ways that Jesus shows us who God is?
  • How does Scripture help you love, and know, and obey God?
  • How did Jesus make a way for your sins to be taken away?
  • How does a person become a Christian?
  • Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your savior and made Him Lord of your life? If so, how did it feel? If not, what questions do you still have?
  • What does it mean to choose to follow Christ and what sorts of things do Christians do to signify their decision to follow Jesus? (be baptized as a symbol of their decision and take communion as part of the body of Christ)
  • How does a person who is a Christian continue to grow in his or her faith?
I delight in these times of exploring Scripture and matters of faith with Calvary’s kids and hope you will as well!

Peace be with you,
Jenni Chilton

Lebanon in July
For almost ten years, Calvary has had a special relationship with the Dar El Awlad, a residential program in Lebanon for boys who come from at-risk situations all across the Middle East.

To this day, boys who live at Dar El Awlad have pictures in their dorm lockers of the Calvarians who have visited them, sent them shoes, and made a difference in their lives, but the truth is that they have made a difference within us, too. We are excited about the opportunity to go back to Dar El Awlad this summer.

Our tentative dates for this summer are July 10-18th. For more info, contact John Hunt.

Grief Group During Lent and Easter

Grief, the response to loss, is actually part of a journey of healing….but it doesn’t feel like it. We know a lot about grief including that it is unique to each person. As Calvary lives into a number of painful losses and challenges, we are offering a time together for those who want to learn how to support each other and support our own healing. This time of grief group, information, and sharing will be led by Dr. Helen Harris from the Garland School of Social Work on Wednesday evenings from 6-7pm beginning on Wednesday, March 18 (the week after Spring Break) and ending Wednesday, April 29. Come to listen or to share or to be present with one another. For more information, contact Mary Alice or John.

Additionally, Providence Hospice offers a grief care program that is open to anyone in the community, not just those who have been connected with their hospice service. They offer a variety of programs to fit everyone’s unique needs in grief, including free brief grief counseling. For more information, contact Jennifer Caballero at jcaballero@chot.org.
