The Illinois State Water Survey (ISWS) has many funded projects that focus on emerging contaminants within water supply, wastewater, and groundwater. This position is designed to provide water quality science expertise to address critical issues across the state. This position is expected to establish a research program that interacts with agencies and outside contractors to enable the scale-up of these processes.
The Illinois State Water Survey (ISWS) is part of the Prairie Research Institute at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, which is centrally located between Chicago, St. Louis, and Indianapolis. Our research and service programs provide citizens, industries, and government agencies at all levels with timely, science-based information and analyses necessary to manage our water resources wisely for economic development and a sustainable environment.
The Illinois State Water Survey is looking to hire a Water Quality Scientist to plan, conduct, supervise, and formulate collaborative research on inorganic and organic contaminants, especially focusing on emerging contaminants (e.g., pharmaceuticals and personal care products, per- and poly-fluorinated chemicals, agriculture chemicals (P and N), micro plastics, and other contaminants including lead) and excessive nutrients in groundwater, surface water, and wastewater.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Establish an independent research program
- Conduct original research in both laboratory and field settings in areas of expertise on chemistry, fate, transport, environmental effects, and remediation of both organic and inorganic contaminants in aquatic systems in Illinois and other regions as applicable.
- Effectively initiate and manage research as principal investigator, including project funds and resources.
- Acquire external funding from government agencies, foundations, private entities, etc. to support research, independently or in collaboration with colleagues
