Welcome to March 2020, everyone! The Carpentries Core Team held its annual in-person meeting between 17 February and 21 February 2020, and we are excited to be back at our desks with renewed energy and fresh resolve to continue working with members of our community to meet our strategic goals and towards our vision.
We continue to acknowledge the challenge that our community members in certain parts of the world are currently facing, with the scourge that is CoronaVirus right at their doorstep. We are still thinking of you, rooting for everyone working to alleviate the issue and we hope with you for a quick resolution to the pandemic, and wish good health and safety to all that are affected in one way or another.
Highlights from The Carpentries Community Calendar
Community Discussions and Themed Discussions in The Carpentries are a great way to interact with, learn from and share your knowledge and experiences with other Carpentries community members from around the world. Subscribe to our community calendar for updates on community calls that may pique your interest and are in a befitting hour depending on your timezone and schedule. You can also watch some of our recorded community calls on our YouTube channel.
Community Discussions
If you recently completed instructor training and are looking to attend a community discussion as part of your checkout process, we have several open slots in the Community Discussions Etherpad that you can sign up to attend. These hour-long discussion sessions are also helpful for instructors and helpers to debrief about past Carpentries workshops and discuss any pertinent questions and ideas around resources and lessons in The Carpentries. Themed Discussions
Themed Discussions and Carpentries Conversations are community calls in The Carpentries that zero in on specific topics, challenges and ideas. On 7 April 2020, the CarpentryCon 2020 Task Force will host two themed discussions with plenty of updates in the run up to CarpentryCon 2020 in Madison. The themed discussions are slotted for 14h00 UTC and 17h00 UTC, and you can scroll down on the Community Discussions Etherpad and sign up to participate.

Community News
The Carpentries Code of Conduct Report, October 2019 to January 2020
The ground rules for the interactions inside our community are covered by The Carpentries Code of Conduct. As part of our Code of Conduct process, the Executive Council publishes a transparency report periodically with a summary of incidents and policy matters. You can find our Code of Conduct report for the period between October 2019 and January 2020 here.
Onboarding Meetings for Carpentries Maintainers
At 16h00 UTC and 21h00 UTC on 4 March 2020 and 11 March 2020, Angela Li, our Maintainer Community Lead, will lead run-through sessions to go over the current Maintainer Onboarding curriculum. More sessions around this will be announced in April. More details about these sessions are available in the Maintainers channel on Slack, or on TopicBox.
Carpentries Trainers Meeting
At the Carpentries Trainers’ meeting in February 2020, Maneesha Sane talked about the behind-the-scenes work that goes into scheduling Instructor Training events in The Carpentries. Feedback from conversations in this meeting will be very instrumental in improving our procedures to better match the needs of Carpentries Trainers, and particularly those in Australia & New Zealand time zones.
Carpentries Community in Africa
SADiLar and The Carpentries have teamed up and have funding to run workshops in 2020 aimed at postgraduate students in the Humanities and Social Sciences in South Africa. If you are interested in taking part, please contact admin-afr@carpentries.org
Led by Angelique van Rensburg, we are hoping to organise a meetup for Carpentries community members in Africa sometime this year. At this stage, we are keen to hear if you are interested and what your thoughts and ideas are. Let us know by filling this form.
Workshop Administration
On 24 February 2020, the Workshop Administration Team started piloting several automated emails for workshops in the US and in South Africa. Emails sent during the pilot are appropriately tagged. We do not anticipate any hiccups, however, should you notice anything unconventional please let us know immediately by contacting team@carpentries.org. Moreover, we are asking all recipients to complete a survey that will be provided in the follow-up email for your workshop, if your workshop is impacted by the automated emails. Your feedback is invaluable and will go a long way in informing subsequent iterations of this automation project. Read more about the pilot in this blog post.
All Things CarpentryCon 2020
CarpentryCon 2020 will bring together Carpentries community members from around the world in June 2020. As June 29 draws close, we are looking for monetary and in-kind support. What you may have missed on the blog and mailing lists
Research Data Alliance Plenary is set to take place in Melbourne from 18-20 March 2020 and is a great opportunity to collaborate and network with people interested in data issues internationally. More details about the RDA Plenary are available in Mikaela Lawrence’s post on TopicBox.
Research Bazaar (ResBaz) Sydney 2020 will be held at The University of Sydney between 7 July and 9 July 2020, with an extra day set aside for HPC sessions on 10 July 2020. Community members based in Sydney and interested in serving as instructors or helpers can register their interest to participate here.

Illinois Natural History Survey is looking for a community manager and a Scientific Specialist. These two positions will help support the development of an open source tool for biodiversity informatics.
The Master of Data Science program and Department of Statistics at the University of British Columbia is hiring Postdoctoral Teaching and Learning Fellows to build and bring industry standard Data Science Education to graduate and undergraduate students. Digital agriculture group at University of Arizona’s Data Science Institute is hiring a software engineer to help scientists leverage big data to improve agriculture, and a scientific programmer proficient in RStats to predict and analyse crop and plant growth with ecological models.

Python Trainers Summit
The Python Trainers Summit is a new hatchery program for PyCon 2020 that will take place all day Friday, 17 April 2020 in Room 409 at the conference venue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. AIDR Symposium 2020
2020’s Artificial Intelligence for Data Discovery and Reuse Symposium will be held on 11 May 2020 at the Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Training Resources Developed by Software Sustainability Institute Fellows
With the motivation to help scientists overcome "code fear" and "statistics anxiety" in learners of all ages and from all walks of life, and to teach Open Science best practices, Software Sustainability Institute's Fellows Isla Myers-Smith and Gergana Daskalova and others developed training materials dubbed “Data Science for Ecologists and Environmental Scientists".
