Kathleen de Caen received her B.Mus. from the University of Alberta where she studied with Tanya Prochazka, followed by a Master’s degree from McGill University under the guidance of Matt Haimovitz. She has been invited on multiple occasions to perform for the ESO Education Concerts and was the featured young artist of their 2012 Symphony Under the Sky series. Chamber music performances have taken Kathleen across North America, including a Carnegie Hall concert with the Uccello ensemble. Kathleen was Acting Principal Cello of Symphony Nova Scotia [Halifax] for the 2017/2018 season and has since joined the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra as a section cellist. She is also a founding member of Trio De Moda. On April 26, 2020 Kathleen will be the soloist for Edmonton's Orchestra Borealis when she will be performing the Shostakovich Cello Concerto No. 1.
Kathleen says of Tanya Prochazka, "Tanya is the person that showed me the path to become a cellist. She taught me how to work hard, to be musical and to never give up. She pushed me harder than I thought I could manage. Some of the most important growth that I experienced as an individual and cellist happened during those amazing four years with her."
