We will be hosting a mid-winter brunch at Doc’s on Sat 14 March from 1000 to 1200. Please come out and visit with your fellow members. Cost will be $17.50 tax and tip inclusive. RSVP to contact@cryc.org by 10 March.
Opening day work party is right around the corner on Saturday 4 April at 0900. I hope to see as many of you as can make it. The club will provide a simple lunch of burgers and dogs. For new members lunch at Noon will be followed with a orientation to the club and facilities. Old hands are welcome too, especially if you need a refresher on such things as hoist usage or closing procedures.
Finally, if you have not paid your 2020 dues – please do so.

 Membership

We currently have 104 members. Dues notices for 2020 were sent in mid-January via postcard to all members, payment is due by March 1, 2020. Payment should be via check to the CRYC, PO Box 24, Centerville, MD 21617. Online payments via the club wevsite will now have a flat service charge of $10.
2020 membership cards will be issued prior to 1 April along with necessary lock combinations.
Board members have already or will be reaching out to each of you via phone during January / February to confirm / update your member data. Please provide accurate data and constructive thoughts.

 Buildings and Grounds

The new schoolhouse is in the final planning stages and will hopefully be delivered by June. Permits are in the process of approval. This asset will greatly increase capabilities for both the schoolhouse and race management. The cost is in the $7,000 range and we are currently seeking donations, large or small, to help defray the club expenditure.
March has arrived like a lion – a windy lion. This is the month when boats and especially tarps sometimes get damaged by high winds. Please make it a point to visit the campus to check your lines.
Spring rains will continue to create boggy conditions in the lower elevations. Please do not drive past an imaginary line running from the pavilion to the school shed because it is boggy this time of year. Members will be held responsible for repairing any damage to the grounds.

As a reminder dues are $250 and an additional $25 if you have a kayak rack.
Current monies on hand 1 March 2020 is $11,200.00 and a capital fund with an additional $10,000.00 in long term CD’s.

We have recently completed our annual inventory and will be restocking with burgees, hats, shirts and lapel pins. Wares will be displayed during club events including the Mid-Winter Brunch and Commissioning Day on 3 May.
- Land’s End - CRYC logo items may be purchased through Lands' End. You will need to create your own account and create a library of logos that you can use. Although there are a few steps involved, it is worth the time setting it all up. When you order an item, you can preview it and adjust the placement of the logo on the garment.

History
The International 420 was designed by Christian Maury. The class developed rapidly in France, being adopted nationally as a youth trainer for the larger Olympic class International 470. By the late 1960s the class was adopted by a few UK university sailing clubs for training and team racing. The 420 was designed specifically to be easier to handle than its larger higher-performance cousin, the 470.
Construction
The class adopted a policy of "prudent evolution" so as to allow development without making existing dinghies obsolete. The hull's seaworthiness and stability at speed proved to be better than most of its contemporaries, and this together with its modest sail area make it fun to sail in heavy weather and thus an excellent youth trainer, qualities that led to its adoption for that role by the Royal Yachting Association in the mid-1970s.
With its trapeze and spinnaker it provides the capability for advanced sailing techniques for international standard sailors, while still remaining affordable and accessible to beginners. The International 420 maintains a large multinational class association. The combination of effective class management, the boat's inherent sailing qualities, and prudent evolution have contributed to the class's continuing success.
Club 420
The Club 420 is a derivative of the 420 and is not recognized by World Sailing or the International 420 Class Association. Designed by Vanguard boats in the 1970s, it has a heavier hull, reinforced for durability in institutional sailing, and a stiff, untapered mast. The boat is much more simple to sail, yet lacks the performance of the original dinghy due to its extra weight. The Club 420 is used extensively on the youth race circuit in the US, with over 5,000 boats in North America, but is not sailed in most other countries. It cannot be used at I420 class events.
