Microgreens—A Popular Winter Gardening Topic
Growing microgreens was covered in Janet Melrose's (Kick Start Your Garden) and Joanna Ogilvie's (Seed Starting) February Society workshops. Whether you're a novice garden or a seasoned one, growing microgreens during the winter gives a gardener some gardening satisfaction...and it's quite simple.

All that is needed is a container, growing medium and sprouting seeds. The growing medium can be a potting mix, a piece of growing rock wool or a hemp pad. Put your medium into the container. If you are using rock wool or a hemp pad, wash it under the tap first. If you are using a potting mix, ensure it is moist. The container used in the workshops was an aluminum loaf pan, but any shallow water-holding container will work. Densely cover the surface of the growing medium with the seeds. Cover the container with plastic wrap or put it into a clear plastic bag for two days. Place in bright indirect light until sprouted. Once the plants are harvest-size, place the container in the fridge to inhibit further growth. Pull the sprouts and eat whole (including the root) or cut the sprout stem off with scissors. The flavour depends upon the type of greens being grown and can be mild (such as alfalfa) or spicy (such as radishes and mustards). Sunflowers must be eaten before stems get hairy. Peas may be harvested twice. Pick the top half of the sprout to eat leaving a few leaves on the plant. The plant will continue to grow for you to enjoy twice. According to Janet Melrose, "microgreens are nutrition bombs!" If you haven't grown microgreens, give it a try!

What Do I Do Now? March
March offers many opportunities to experience what Kath Smyth calls the "Spring Tease" season. It's not spring until March 19, but there's plenty for a gardener to do. Read Colleen Tanner's article What Do I Do Now? March by logging into the Members Only section of the website and selecting Calgary Gardening to access the current issue (February/March) of the magazine. Let's exercise that green thumb!
Membership
Just a reminder that Society membership fees are increasing April 1, 2020. Come April, the individual membership fee will be $55 and the senior (65+) membership fee will be $35. The "Bring a Friend" benefit is also goes into effect. A member will be able to bring a guest to a Society event for the member price. Please note that the Society is no longer offering a family membership.

Photo Competition "Garden Superheroes"
As you may be aware, the Calgary Horticultural Society Garden Show happens during Calgary Expo (Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo). We thought we could have a little fun with this overlap and make a call for "Garden Superheroes" for our photo contest. Do you have a heroic plant that shows it's super-strength with outstanding performance or blooms every year? Or perhaps, it's a fantastic plant that you can call on to lift your spirits? Maybe your garden superhero is a lady bug that conquers the evil aphids! Share your imagination and photography talent by sending us your best "superhero" photo.

Visit calhort.org/What's Happening/Garden Show 2020/Photo Contest for details on how to enter. The photo contest will close on Wednesday, April 1 at midnight. Online voting to select the ten favourite photos from the entries will open on Friday, April 3 and close on Sunday, April 19. Voting is open to everyone visiting the Garden Show photo contest page. These ten favourite photos will be displayed at the Garden Show. The winner will be selected by "people's choice" voting at the Show.

Container Competition "From the Kitchen"
The Garden Show's ever-popular event, the Container Competition, is back! If you enjoy container gardening and being creative, then this Show activity is for you. Use any kitchen item such as a colander, old teacup, kettle, lunch box or baking tray as a unique container. Add plants, cut flowers, greens and decorations to make an original design.

Visit calhort.org/What's Happening/Garden Show 2020 for details on how to enter. Winners are selected by "people's choice" voting at the Show, making it fun for Show attendees as well as for the competition's entrants.
