January News from the Foster-Powell Neighborhood Association

Hello neighbors,

I looks like spring is starting early this year and your all-volunteer board of the Foster-Powell Neighborhood Association (FPNA) is planning on ways to grow community. Come hear what's popping up in our area at our neighborhood Brazilian Café, Favela!

At the upcoming, 9-March, general meeting of the Foster-Powell Neighborhood Association we will be hearing from Shawn Morgan about possible uses for the $100,000 Laurelwood Center Community Investment Fund, Nicholas Swanson's Letter to PBOT to slow traffic on SE 72nd, and FPNA's upcoming elections and community events.

Your all-volunteer board of the FPNA continues to work on improvements to the walking trail at Firland Parkway, partnering with the Parks Dept. to redevelop Laurelwood Park, providing more community meals to our new neighbors in the local shelters, and so many more community-building activities. We are constantly looking for fresh ideas and volunteers to make our community even more vibrant. Come and add YOUR skillset to one of the many upcoming opportunities we have to get together and help build a community we all are proud share?

The Foster-Powell Neighborhood Association meets the 2nd Monday of the month. Meeting information and an agenda are below.

Hope to see you there,
Eric Furlong
Chair, Foster-Powell Neighborhood Association

Transgender in America

SE Uplift, 3534 SE Main St (map) – MUST RSVP
Culturally enforced binary gender role stereotypes have erased the inclusive and expansive understandings of gender identity and expression embraced by indigenous cultures and customs. This oppression has marginalized and silenced the voices of gender expansive children, youth and adults for more than 400 years. “Transgender in America” facilitates conversation and reconsideration of a binary gender understanding through greater awareness of historical events, laws, ideology and personal stories at this time when violence against Transpeople is on the rise. Offered by Lewis and Clark’s TransActive Gender Center. Click here to RSVP.

Vote on Proposals for Community Investment Funds

Part of the agreement between the City of Portland and Multnomah County when siting the Laurelwood Center was the allocation of Community Investment Funds to support integrating our new neighbors into our community. The Steering Committee has been working with the City and the County to identify the best use(s) of the $100,000 fund. The City and County government representatives have issued these two proposed uses and are seeking the community’s input.

Please take this survey and provide your feedback on how the Community Investment Funds should be allocated.
