President's Message

Spring is upon us and as the days get longer and the temperature climbs, I hope everyone gets an opportunity to enjoy their horses more.

The Association held our annual general membership meeting and awards banquet on January 25th. A huge thank you to all that were able to attend with the date change due to winter weather.

I would like to thank Jamie Wright for volunteering to be our new Youth Coordinator replacing Hunter Offord. For the youth that would like to become involved, or find out more about the Youth Association, Jamie can be contacted at WAHA.youthcoordinator@gmail.com.

In addition, I would like to thank Melanie Erce for volunteering to be our new representative on the Wisconsin Horse Council.

The item on the agenda that had the most discussion this year was the budget. Specifically, the two traditional rated shows that WAHA has been involved in. The Show Committee spent countless hours analyzing the data and attempting to find solutions to the financial issues. In the end they were unable to find a way to have the Badger Classic show make a profit or break even. Significant changes for 2020 projected a small profit for the August show, but even more changes will likely be needed for 2021. Both shows are suffering from declining horse counts making it difficult to cover facility, judging, and show administration expenses. The final budget approved was to not participate in the Badger Classic this year, host the August show this year, and run a spring and fall open show.  Thank you to everyone who spoke on this topic at the meeting and for keeping it polite and professional. Ideas presented, such as open breed dressage classes and partnering with another breed organization, will all be evaluated by the show committee to make our rated shows, and our association, financially viable into the future. For anyone wishing to serve on the Show Committee, or contribute ideas, please feel free to email me (tim@antearmannarabians.com) and I will forward on to the committee.

Youth Updates!
New Youth Coordinator: Jamie Wright
Contact: WAHA.youthcoordinator@gmail.com

My name is Jamie Wright, and I am the new WAHA Youth Coordinator. I live in Edgerton, Wisconsin. I have been riding and showing Arabian horses to varying degrees for 20 years and was an active member of WAHA Youth. In those days, I participated in the judging team, went to Youth Nationals as a convention delegate, and did a little bit of everything the program had to offer at that time, so I hope to be able to help our current youth make use of these same opportunities. I currently have a Half-Arabian (PHF On the Virg, “Max”) that I show primarily as a sport horse.

Youth Regional Team Tournament:
The Region 10 Team Tournament sign-up deadline is April 1st, 2020, or prior to your team’s first show (whichever comes first). Team entry and payment must be submitted in order for any show results to count toward the tournament. Fees this year have also changed to $20/team. Separate divisions are offered for open and rated shows. Contact WAHA.youthcoordinator@gmail.com if interested in participating. Learn more about the Regional Team Tournament at https://www.arabianhorses.org/youth/activities/#RYTT

A Fundraising Opportunity
We are looking for volunteers to help prepare food and/or operate the food stand for the “Shake off the Snow” WAHA-hosted open show on April 4 in Deerfield. This fundraiser will help us put together social events (pizza parties, etc.) at shows, educational opportunities, and any other activities we would like to put together.

Youth Surveys
Thank you to everyone who has submitted a survey! If you have not completed a survey, I would still like to hear from you. Please consider taking a couple minutes to answer the 4-question survey as it will help me determine which type of events and which physical locations are most relevant for everyone. The survey is here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/TV9YLTD.
If you have not received either of the previous emails I have sent, or you would like to touch base about anything related to WAHA Youth, please contact WAHA.youthcoordinator@gmail.com.

Upcoming Youth Meeting
Our next meeting is on the Sunday of Midwest Horse Fair (April 19, 1:00pm – time tentative, based on the scheduled Arabian breed demo time) at the Arabian stalls. All WAHA youth are encouraged to attend!

2019 WAHA Ambassador: PHF On The Virg

Congratulations to our 2019 WAHA Ambassador Award Winner, PHF On the Virg, owned by Jamie Wright.

This award is given to a registered Half-Arabian or Purebred Arabian that has been a goodwill ambassador for the Arabian breed.  The owner of the horse nominated MUST be a member of WAHA as an associate or regular member. The horse honored should exhibit outstanding and unusual performance and/or service to people when measured against other breeds, not necessarily in the show ring.  This horse should also demonstrate the loyalty and trustworthiness that highlight the Arabian breed.

PHF On the Virg  “Max” is a 2002, half-Arabian gelding owned by Jamie Wright of Edgerton, Wisconsin. Jamie bred, owned, and has trained this beautiful bay gelding.

He has been a great ambassador for half-Arabians by his numerous appearances at a variety of expos, including the Midwest Horse Fair, Minnesota Horse Expo, and Breyerfest in Kentucky.  Even while competing at Sport Horse Nationals at Balmoral Park in 2019, Max was found snuggling up to two young ladies that were visiting and just desperately wanted to meet a horse.

Max, is of course, a talented horse on the trail and in the show ring as well, showing both Arabian and open shows. In addition to a top ten at Arabian Sport Horse Nationals in 2019, he earned two regional titles in 2019 as well. He is equally at home on the trail and can be found babysitting the nervous and young horses. In fact, while on the trail at Silverwood Park this fall, he caught the attention of a local newspaper gal, who took his photo and featured him in the paper. Such a ham! What’s even more remarkable about Max is that he is bred by Jamie, has been owned by her his entire life, and is self trained. A true amateur owned and trained horse. This speaks volumes to his wonderful disposition.

The Arabian (and half-Arabian) is a faithful and wonderful companion and “Max” is a true example of this. In the show ring, on the trail, doing demonstrations, or community outreach, Max is ready to greet everyone with ears pricked and a happy demeanor.

Melanie Erce has volunteered to be the Wisconsin State Horse Council (WSHC) representative for WAHA. She has owned a boarding farm, Blue Sunday Stables, since 2006. All breeds and disciplines are welcome. She has also participated in Arabian and USDF horse shows as a dedicated show mom, dressage test reader and show bun expert. She attended her first WSHC meeting in February and is looking forward to attending many more. Thank you, Melanie!

2020 Point System Updates

Hello from the 2020 WAHA Points Committee,

First I wanted to thank the previous committee members that lovingly tended to this program and answered so many questions over the years: Deb Alt, Gay-Jean Bower, and Cheryl Bumgarner. Thank you for all of your service.

The 2020 WAHA Points System Committee consists of Kristin Hendrickson, Lerin Hendrickson, Tammy Teubert, Jessica Dillingham, and Nyssa Sheridan. All are very enthusiastic about this wonderful program that WAHA offers.

The committee just wanted to invite all members to review the new rules for 2020 and wanted to highlight some of the changes for this year:

  • Reduced and reviewed categories based on entry and showing trends
  • A FREE entry into the age division for each associate or full WAHA member
  • A flat rate entry into all show divisions and the WAHA Legion of Merit Program
  • Inclusion of “closed” classes and shows, like National Show Horse or Fall Fest
  • One point per mile ridden for trail riding division
  • Online submissions available for show results!

There are a few other minor changes. Your new committee looks forward to serving the members in this exciting program. Feedback, of course, is always welcomed and taken into consideration.

Look for complete rules, entry forms, and point reporting forms on the WAHA website soon!

Your WAHA Points Committee Team,

Jessica, Kristin, Lerin, Tammy, and Nyssa
