On 21 February the Victorian Government passed its Gender Equality Bill. Minister for Women, Gabrielle Williams, said the Bill was an Australian first and represented a once in a generation opportunity to influence policy, social norms, cultural expectations and attitudes across Victoria.
The legislation applies to public sector workplaces and will help close the gender pay gap, improve gender equality at all levels of the workforce and reduce workplace sexual harassment. The Bill requires public sector organisations, universities and local councils to develop and implement Gender Equality Action Plans every four years – including data on the current state of gender equality in the organisation and strategies for achieving workplace gender equality. Their progress will be reported on every two years – with results made public for accountability and transparency. Organisations will also need to undertake gender impact assessments, ensuring that policies, programs and services consider the different needs of Victorians of all genders.
Violence against women is serious, prevalent and driven by Gender Inequality. The Gender Equality Bill is relevant to many of our partners and will further reinforce the work of the South Coast Partnership to Prevent Men’s Violence Against Women.

Victorian Volunteer Strategy
The Victorian Government has committed to develop and implement a Volunteer Strategy to support and enhance volunteerism in Victoria.
Volunteers are a vital part of Victoria’s social, economic, cultural and environmental fabric, and deliver immense value to Victoria – for communities, places and individuals
While Victoria is home to a vibrant culture of giving, volunteers and volunteering are changing. For volunteering to thrive into the future it requires both a bold vision and practical approaches.
We encourage you to share your thoughts by completing one - or if relevant - both of the surveys below.
International Women's Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender equality.
International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on progress, to call for change and to celebrate the courage and determination of the women who changed history, and those who will advance gender equality into the future. It is also an opportunity to unite, network and mobilise for more meaningful change.
Everywhere, gender is on the mainstream radar and impacting the narrative. Stereotypes and bias are more likely to be called out. Men's role in society is more varied and gender roles are fluid.
We are moving to a very exciting time in history where the world now "expects" gender balance. The world notices its absence and celebrates its presence.
Women are a driving force in the health workforce. Approximately 80% of our health workforce identifies as female. The research tells us that the mainly female frontline health workers compensate for the shortcomings of the health system through individual adjustments, at times to the detriment of their own health and livelihoods. (George, A. 2008) This International Women’s Day take the time to think about what this means for you.
And remember….
An equal world is an enabled world
The rise of women is not about the fall of men
Everyone can play a role in forging gender parity
Gender balance is not a women's issue, it's everyone’s issue
Advocacy, inclusive mindsets and tangible action are needed from all
