Welcome to our March newsletter
International Women's Day will be held on Sunday 8 March and MNC will be holding a special lunch to celebrate on Thursday 5th. The aim of the movement is to challenge stereotypes, fight bias, broaden perceptions and celebrate women's achievements. We invite you to wear something purple and bring a friend or friends – any gender!
And MNC has received a very welcome grant from the Qld Government's Dignity First Fund which will further enable the Centre to support women transitting from homelessness in our Women's House project. (More below).

MALENY TEMPORARY ACCOMMODATION
FOR WOMEN AND CHILDREN
In August 2019 MNC submitted an application for Round 4 of the Qld Government’s Dignity First Fund. The Government sought proposals that aimed to support people transition from homelessness, with lasting dignity. In December 2019 MNC was advised that their application had been successful.
Funding started in January and will finish in December, and will support tenants of the Maleny Temporary Accommodation for Women and Children (Women’s House) to move into more permanent housing, by assisting them with the purchase of essential items such as beds and linen, white goods and kitchen and cleaning appliances.
From the start of this project in late 2018, MNC has supported 14 women and 11 children with accommodation who were homeless or at risk of homelessness. 12 women and 8 children have been able to make other housing arrangements, with 2 women and 3 children currently living at the women’s house.
Tenants are assisted to link with services that will support them both emotionally and physically and that will help them to secure suitable housing. Unfortunately, although many of the tenants would like to stay in the Maleny area there are limited affordable housing opportunities here.

Volunteer of
the month –
Jim Straker
|
|
|
Currently MNC vice president and coordinator of both Fixit Cafe and the MNC garden, Jim has been at the Centre for about 5 years. He helps anywhere it may be needed.
Jim is an environmental and civil engineer and has worked in at least 10 different countries, mainly in the field of waste management. Kim and Jim (married for 52 years) live on an acre block in Reesville – koalas, echidnas and many different birds visit this green wilderness.
On many Friday afternoons Jim provides JP services at Maleny Library. He has been a JP for 27 years and enjoys being able to help people in this way. Dowsing, native bees and fixing things are also some of Jim’s other passions.

Our last Fixit was a good day with some bicycles being refurbished and secateurs and garden tools sharpened.
We have a great team who undertake the tasks but everyone would like to have a backup person for holiday or other personal times when they can not attend Fixit. We therefore seek the following additional helpers:
– Sewer for minor rips and tears
– Bicycle repairs
– Wood worker for small furniture items
If you are interested, please contact Jim on 5494 3229 or at zrowaste@gmail.com
