Welcome to Wiser Now’s weekly email blast which reflects our eclectic interests and, we hope, yours. Apparently, I’m not off-base in that hope. Thanks to all of you who have sent kind words of appreciation.

This week, our focus is on Celebrate Your Name Week, officially underway on the 1st, but fun to celebrate all month. I am a name addict. I love to read about how people and places got their names, and I frequently ask people to tell me their name stories – Everyone has one, although it sometimes takes a bit of probing. Later this month I will have a new slide show on names available on my Wiser Now website.

We hope you are finding these offerings fun and maybe even useful. We welcome your feedback. (Kathy@WiserNow.com) And if you haven’t yet pressed the subscribe button so this newsletter doesn’t go to spam, please do so now.

The Quirky Quote

There are so many name quotes to choose from, but this one by Peanuts cartoonist Charles Shultz struck my funny bone:

Sometimes I lie awake at night and ask, “Why me?” Then a voice answers, ”Nothing personal, your name just happened to come up.”

The Quirky Observation

Plenty of famous people have their own name stories. Did you know, for example:

  • That John Wayne, whose real name was Marion Robert Morrison, was never comfortable being called John and preferred Duke or Marion?
  • Ian Fleming chose his hero’s name from his favorite ornithologist, James Bond?
  • Bill gates’ nickname is Trey because he is the third generation to carry the name William Gates?

The Quirky Facts

Jamie Foxx once said, “Having a stage name is like having a Superman complex. I go into the telephone booth as Eric Bishop and come out as Jamie Foxx.” But oddly, a number of famous authors are more famous for their real names than the pseudonyms they sometimes wrote under, such as:

Isaac Asimov – Paul French
Agatha Christie – Mary Westmacott
Michael Crichton – John Lange
Steven King – Richard Bachman
Joyce Carol Oates – Rosamond Smith

And did you know? Dav Pilkey, creator of the popular "Captain Underpants" children's book series took the pen name at one time of “Sue Denim” – a play on the word “pseudonym.”

The Featured Product
Celebrating the Irish is my latest slide show available at www.WiserNow.com. It includes a quiz on the meaning of Irish names with answers likely to surprise you. The solid Irish name that is a favorite soup brand, for example, refers to an amusing facial feature. The 135 slides offer many other trivia quizzes, word games, and Irish blessings. Sure and begorra, you’ll love it. Order it now.
