Learn More about Trekking the Planet with our new Q&A

We have put together answers to some of our most frequently asked questions, including:
  • How did you come up with the idea to travel around the world?
  • At what point did Trekking the Planet become a trip to promote geo-literacy?
  • How do you pack for this kind of trip?
  • What materials will you be sharing with educators and students during your journey?
  • How are you going to communicate with the classrooms?
The complete Q&A text can be read here.

Trekking Spotlight: Patagonia / Torres del Paine - Argentina and Chile

At the bottom tip of South America is the Torres del Paine / Patagonia region.   Trekking here goes through one of the most beautiful places on earth.  En route are giant granite spikes, bright blue wind-whipped lakes, iceberg-loaded rivers and the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, which is a vast junction of glaciers.  To learn more about this hike and our other planned treks, visit our Trip Overview page.

Preparation Progress

We are now less than three months away from our journey!  This month we have been focusing on two areas of our itinerary: Central Asia and West Africa.  In Central Asia we are close to having a firm plan that includes trekking, visiting Silk Road architectural sites and cultural activities.  Our current West Africa schedule will start in Mali, continue to Burkina Faso and end in Ghana.  We are also close to finalizing this portion of our trip, including our trekking in the Dogon area of Mali.  The next step will be to obtain visas for several of these countries before we leave the United States.

Once these two areas are complete we will next turn to East Africa and our plans there.  We also will verify our Europe itinerary and our trekking plans in Sweden and Slovenia. Our goal is to wrap this all up before Christmas. We will let you know our progress in December's newsletter.

Share Trekking the Planet with Others

Trekking the Planet is a 424-day, around-the-world trip to raise K-12 geo-literacy.  We plan to visit approximately 50 countries on six continents. During the expedition we plan to trek to some of the most remote and unspoiled places in the world.  By visiting places of cultural and natural significance, our hope is to instill a greater awareness and curiosity about the world in as many young people as possible. The journey begins on 28 January 2012. During our expedition, we will be releasing free weekly educational materials that will correspond to our current location.

Do you know educators who may be interested in following the Trekking the Planet journey and receiving our free materials?  They can subscribe to future newsletters and materials by completing our Subscription Form.  Non-educators who want to follow our travels and receive future monthly newsletters can sign-up as well using our Friends link.

Education Update

In the past month we have received a great number of classroom subscribers. Our total is now about 17,000 worldwide!  This total includes educators from 12 countries and 24 U.S. states. We also have received several more Friend subscribers and are now above 50 overall.    You can view our current education subscribers by country by clicking the mapThanks for the great support from both our Educator and Friend followers!

The past two months have been busy and we have been averaging several classroom presentations per week.  Our presentations have ranged from 1st grade to high school.  We have enjoyed talking to the students and answering their questions about our journey. Our presentation schedule currently takes us through early December.   If you are an educator in the Southern California area and would like to have us visit your school, please contact us using this form.  We are also happy to Skype with any teachers and classrooms worldwide so let us know if you would like to schedule a time by contacting us, using the form link above.
