Generation Green - Updates

Green Generation
In November 2019, the Halton Climate Collective hosted a Youth Un-conference to kick off the
Generation Green program. Over 200 students attended to gain the skills, tools, and resources needed for them to implement their very own greenhouse gas emission reduction initiatives in their communities.

Student Projects
We now have over 75 students completing over 50 different projects in their communities, which primarily focus on driving less, using less energy, eating fewer animal-based foods, and producing less waste.

Wrap-up Event
Students who complete a project are then invited to the Generation Green Wrap-up Event, which will be hosted on March 20, 2020 (during March Break) from 10am - 3pm at Queen Elizabeth Park Community & Cultural Centre (QEPCCC) in Oakville. This event will be an opportunity for students to share their projects and their impact with their peers. At the event, successful students will also receive a Certificate of Completion, a pizza party, and a chance to win prizes and awards!

We can't wait to see the results of these student projects!
Sharing Experiences Workshop

On February 22, the Halton Climate Collective took part in the Sharing Experiences Workshop (SEW), a biennial one day capacity-building workshop for individuals and community groups interested in creating positive environmental change. The goal of the workshop is to link like-minded people and groups to facilitate the sharing of ideas and experiences so that participants can build skills, network and share ideas about environmental projects in their respective communities.

This year's focus was on Climate Change and Youth Engagement. The HCC shared how we are able to engage youth through the Generation Green program in the presentation, "Engaging Youth to Lead the Climate Conversation: Success Story of the Youth-Led Generation Green Program".  Some of our outstanding Generation Green youth then sat on a youth panel to discuss their inspiration for taking climate action. The youth panel received overwhelmingly positive feedback, for which we are so proud of them! Great work done by all of the Generation Green youth!

Municipal Corner

In 1946, The Conservation Authorities Act was created by the Ontario Provincial Legislature to ensure the conservation, restoration, development and management of Ontario’s natural resources through delivery of watershed-based programs and services.

In recent weeks, the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) has been hosting a series of invitation-only multi-stakeholder consultations to engage municipalities, conservation authorities, development, agricultural, landowner, environmental, and conservation organizations to provide input on how to improve the efficiencies, consistency, transparency and oversight of conservation authorities (CAs). While there was a lot of positive support and feedback at these sessions, there were also strong and adamant messages that conservation authorities be removed from the planning process and have their mandate and scope limited.

The workbooks presented at the meetings have now been adapted into this online survey. In order to make sure the environmental voice is heard, we strongly encourage groups and individuals from across Ontario to submit feedback in the survey. The deadline to respond is March 13, 2020.

At last night's Town of Oakville Special Council Meeting regarding the Community Energy Plan (CEP), Town of Oakville Councillors unanimously voted in support of the plan. Thank you to all of those who came out and showed their support, including youth leader Uzair who delegated to Council (above left), to the task force teammates for all of their hard work on the CEP (above right), and to the Town of Oakville Councillors for supporting climate action (above right).
