Welcome to February's news from Action on Pre-eclampsia.

Dear <<First Name>>

We hope the storms of the past weeks haven't affected our supporters too much and that you are all safe. Despite being in Worcestershire, I am happy to report our Evesham office has not flooded! This means we have still been working hard on many different projects such as study days, research and planning our annual Expert meeting.

Political update

We wanted to congratulate APEC supporter, Victoria Prentis MP on becoming Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Baby Loss but within weeks of taking up this position she has become a Minister at DEFRA, so congratulations and good luck with that.

In other political news, PlGF implementation is being discussed in the Scottish Parliament very soon, we will keep you informed of the outcome from this.

The BUMP Trials – Trial protocol published in BMJ Open

APEC have been working closely with Prof Richard McManus, Prof Lucy Chappell and researchers at the University of Oxford on the BUMP 1&2 trials which are evaluating the effect of self-monitoring of blood pressure in pregnancy.

They are investigating both whether monitoring blood pressure at home during pregnancy can help the early detection of high blood pressure (hypertension) in women who have a greater risk of developing pre-eclampsia (BUMP1) and also whether it improves the control of blood pressure in women who already have hypertension (BUMP2).

The BUMP trials are running in 15 participating maternity hospitals in England and have recruited 2442 women in to BUMP 1 and 600 women to BUMP 2. Recruitment into the trials is now complete and they are expected to end in Summer 2020 with results in early 2021.

Experience

Alison White, author, Letter to Louis

"I suffered from undetected pre-eclampsia, and sadly as a result my son suffered brain damage. My memoir touches briefly on the events around my emergency delivery, but the core of my story is after this time. I take the reader on a journey with us over the next eighteen years. They experience what happens afterwards when things have gone wrong.

I hope my memoir highlights why regular antenatal checks are vitally important for the early detection and management of pre-eclampsia. These checks are life saving and help to avoid the life-long consequences which occur from unmanaged incidents of pre-eclampsia such as mine.

Letter to Louis will be dramatised on Radio 4 from 4th – 8th May 2020.

New Pre-eclampsia Bereavement Study launch 3rd March

APEC have been working closely with Professor Alex Heazell and colleagues at the University of Manchester to design a survey which will help us understand how best to support parents bereaved by pre-eclampsia. We then aim to put specific support in place which will best help parents at such a difficult time. We will be launching the survey on Monday 3rd March on our Facebook and Twitter feeds.

If you feel able to to help, your responses would be treated with the utmost respect and discretion, please do look out for it and share
Thank you.
