Hello, New Subscribers and Old Friends!
It has been a long time - too long, and many of you know, from my site and from Facebook, I have been MIA mostly due to illness and injury. It is with much optimism and gratitude I can say: I am back and looking forward to making the Newsletter a much more regular feature!

This one will be brief. I circulated a promise to include recipes in the rebooted Newsletter, so we will start with one of those. I have some trepidation about recipes, as what works for one 60-pound, 9-year-old spayed female Lab mix, might not be ideal for another; dogs are individuals as I've been saying forever. But sharing recipes can give readers a place to start - and, if anyone is taking the new Tutorial, you will soon learn how to adjust an existing recipe - to make it better suited to your own unique individual - whether that means, higher or lower fat, fiber, carb...different ingredients...it's a joy to learn this simple skill and be able to develop recipes for our dogs as they age, or for new members of the family, or just to offer variety.

So, to start, here is the link to information about the March session of the Home Cooking Tutorial - and to kick off the return of the Newsletter, a single day cooked recipe, for..a 60-pound dog, who might tend to weight gain, based on age and breed tendencies. :-)

One Day Recipe - Cooked

To make this one-day chicken-based recipe, combine the following and mix well.
Note that all weights given are for foods after cooking. Please use gram weights, not cups, which are less accurate and only given as a general guideline.
  • 1 cup (140 grams) dark meat chicken, roasted and diced, no skin
  • 1 cup (140 grams) chicken breast, roasted and diced, no skin
  • 1 cup (245 grams) canned pumpkin, no sugar, salt or spices added
  • 1/2 cup (92.5 grams) well rinsed and cooked quinoa
  • 100 grams water packed sardines, drained, and mashed
  • 12 grams poached beef liver
  • 30 grams poached chicken liver
  • 1 whole large egg, no shell, boiled and diced
  • 1/4 cup  (32.5 grams) steamed and drained kale
Allow this mixture to cool, and stir in the following supplements. This recipe is adequate in all the Bs, except slightly low in Thiamin (B1) and I personally like to boost B comp a little over the RA (Recommended Allowance) anyway, so I would add about 1/3 capsule (needn't be exact!) of this B complex I really like (and use with my own dogs): https://ca.iherb.com/pr/Thorne-Research-B-Complex-6-60-Capsules/18129

Stir these directly into the food and serve – two meals is ideal, or two plus a snack.

This recipe is developed for a 60-pound dog, who needs lower calories perhaps related to age or breed - and does well with low carb and higher fat. It may not suit the needs of all 60-pound dogs!  Some nice additions for the day might include:
  • a little extra steamed veggie (cruciferous, maybe)
  • a few mashed blueberries,
  • 1/4 tsp tomato paste
... non-essentials, but very beneficial!

Nutrient info below. :-)
ENJOY! We'll do a  raw version next time.
