Growing Peppers—and Resiliency—in Puerto Rico


A partnership in Las Carolinas, Puerto Rico, is helping the volunteers of a community kitchen grow vegetables and herbs to support their efforts feeding local residents. The garden project, part of a collaborative effort to build resilience following the devastation brought by hurricanes Maria and Irma in 2017, was supported by donations to Rutgers Global Health Institute during last year’s Rutgers Giving Day.

60-Second Challenge: Why You Should Care About Cancer in the Developing World


As part of World Cancer Day on February 4, Rutgers Global Health Institute director Richard Marlink had 60 seconds to convince viewers of a popular video series that they should care about cancer care in the developing world—where cancer mortality rates are staggering.

Application Deadline for Global Health Seed Grants
Rutgers Global Health Institute will award five projects up to $10,000 each. Faculty conducting collaborative, interdisciplinary activities that address health inequities in New Jersey and around the world are encouraged to apply.

 

March 16, Piscataway

Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Distinction Symposium
Graduates of the medical school’s distinction programs—which include global health, bioethics, medical innovation, research, and others—will give presentations at the annual symposium and dinner event. Advance registration is required; RSVP online by March 11.

 

March 19, Newark

6th Annual Global Health Nursing Conference
Presented by the School of Nursing, this conference will focus on improving public health for marginalized populations domestically and internationally. The keynote speaker is Rear Admiral Sylvia Trent-Adams, principal deputy assistant secretary for health in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
