HEALTHTECH NEWS 🗞

Regulating Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Health and Care

Matt Gould, NHSX CEO,  recently convened CEOs and 12 heads of regulatory bodies to determine a list of priorities that could encourage innovation whilst maintaining compliance in the UK.

Some of the key themes that were discussed and highlighted were:
  1. Clarity of roles between the MHRA, HRA, NICE, CQC and the ICO.
  2. A joined up single platform which would enable innovators to no longer have to navigate a series of different bodies.
  3. A joined up sandbox for regulatory purposes.
  4. Capabilities to enable access to AI systems at scale and in a safe manner.
  5. The vision to quickly progress methodologies for handling Machine Learning capabilities.
  6. Communication between clinicians, innovators and the public
It was highlighted that the NHS AI Lab would aim to play a crucial role in this journey. With the overall vision being: effective collaboration leading to the UK being a health and care AI innovation leader.  If all the different moving parts were in place, Matt Gould stated that the, "UK [could] be one of the leaders in exploiting AI systems and technologies [within] health and care".
The summary of the session can be found in Matt Gould's blog post here
