The Early Morning Centre - UnitingCare Canberra City
Addressing issues of homelessness

In this update:

Like all people who remained in Canberra for the summer, the EMC guests, staff and volunteers have had a subdued start to the new year with the smoke, heat and threat of fire heavily impacting on our activities and our minds. The rain and easier temperatures have raised spirits and people are enjoying being outside again and being part of the EMC community. Our long-term staff members - Nicole, John and Nic - have been joined by Cherie and Daisy who have brought their skills and enthusiasm to the team.

This year we are planning several events for our Friends including a Big Breakfast, a film night and of course our popular Jazz in the Garden to welcome Spring.

New BBQ for the EMC

The Early Morning Centre's new BBQ donated by Alicia Payne MP
BBQ lunches are an important part of building friendships within the EMC community and they are often used as a celebration particularly in the footy season.

The Rugby League season kicks off in March and we will have a BBQ cooked by players from the Canberra Raiders - thanks to Raiders champion and EMC volunteer Sia Soliola.

This BBQ will mark the start of the popular footy tipping contest and it will be the first for our new BBQ which has been kindly donated by Alicia Payne MP, the federal member for Canberra and a former EMC volunteer.

Easter lunch

Thanks to the members of the Egyptian Coptic Church for hosting our Easter Lunch

As has been the tradition for the last few years the members of the St Mark Coptic Orthodox Church will be catering for the EMC Easter lunch that will be held in April. This lunch is always a highlight for guests and is a true feast.

We are very grateful to the members of St Mark's for their continuing support of the EMC at Easter and Christmas.

EMC flashback - our mosaic unveiling

The EMC's community mosaic

In 2016 the EMC’s late Director, Ms Chris Stokman, saw the concrete pillar dividing the centre as an opportunity for something beautiful; a community mosaic.

In March 2017, we welcomed the ACT Deputy Chief Minister, Yvette Berry, and other guests as our EMC mosaic was officially unveiled. With the support of Canberra mosaic artist Kim Grant, guests, staff, volunteers, local politicians and service providers all contributed to the mosaic’s creation. For many of us it was our first experience of this craft and we found it challenging and interesting and the final result was incredibly rewarding.

It is still admired every day. It is a great memorial for Chris and her photo on the pillar smiles over us all.
