Remote Tower Updates
Hello <<First Name>>,

Well, another successful annual meeting. One of the things that we talked about was getting members to send in some of their experiences in flying. After all "We are more than an N number".

To that end, we have added a new section aptly titled We are more than an N number. Please remember, if you talked to anyone at the meetings and you find them interesting, then so will we, so let us know. How far have you flown your plane? What countries have you flown to? What experiences did you have while flying? We want to know. If you don't want to write it up, let me know and I will help you. You never know when one of us would like to visit some of the places you have gone and just are not aware of it.

Safety

Christman Field/CSU Drone Center
Did you know that CSU has an active Drone program?  I didn't.  I frequently fly over Christman field and had no idea all the activity that was going on at what I thought was an abandoned airfield located just 10 miles northwest of Fort Collins.

The Director of the CSU Drone Center has expressed concern about low-flying, manned aircraft over Christman field, in some cases what appears to be low approaches over the airfield with vehicles on the runway and active UAS flights.  Here's an excerpt from the email that you may find interesting.
Over the last 2 years, Christman has been developed into a UAS testing, training, and research facility.  We often have many flights per week, with some flights lasting all day.  The UAS range from small, several pounds, all the way up to the 55-pound limit.  With possible plans to develop even further into heavier unmanned aviation.  We also have waivers for beyond visual line of sight, night flight, and an application for high altitude (699 AGL).
...
It is always the UAS responsibility to get out of the way of manned aviation.  However, I am wondering if you can let your renters, CFIs, and students know that Christman Airfield is an active UAS flight facility and low altitude flight over the field may present a hazard to them.  I have attempted to get Christman Field marked as such on VFR charts but was denied by the FAA. Also, Christman Airfield is always fair game in event of an emergency, its got some potholes but better than a field. However, as the airfield manager, I am asking if they could avoid using it as a training opportunity for low altitude work.
If you are interested you can find out more about the CSU Drone Center.
