2020 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art

The 2020 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art - Monster Theatres - invites artists to make visible the monsters of our time. Curator Leigh Robb says ‘Monsters ask us to interrogate our relationships with each other, the environment and technology. They force us to question our empathy towards difference across race, gender, sexuality and spirituality'.

The term ‘monster’ comes from Latin monere, to warn, and monstrare, to show or make visible. The exhibition title hints at a double narrative which also resonates through the multiple meanings of ‘theatre’. An operating theatre is a room in which to examine, dissect as well as heal; it is also a theatre of war, a site of conflict where clashes between nations and ideologies play out all too frequently, but a theatre is also an arena – an active social space.

Curator Leigh Robb says 'Monster Theatres proposes an arena of speculation, a circus of the unorthodox and the absurd, a shadow play between truth and fiction. The title is inspired by a group of provocative Australian artists. Their urgent works of art are warnings made manifest. These theatres are theirs.’

Printmaking Conferences to plan for...

IMPACT 11

International Printmaking Conference
22 to 26 September 2020

IMPACT – International Multi-disciplinary Printmaking, Artists, Concepts and Techniques – is one of the largest professional conferences dedicated specifically to printmaking. It was first held in 1999, by The Centre for Fine Print Research at the University of the West of England.

Since 2009, Hong Kong Open Printshop has attended the IMPACT conferences, meeting friends and gaining experience. Now, after years of planning, IMPACT is coming to Hong Kong. IMPACT 11 will be the largest international printmaking conference ever staged in Hong Kong. To mark this important occasion, the theme Print Art Hong Kong: Legends and Legacies has been chosen, alongside an exciting series of cultural exchange programmes that introduce Hong Kong’s contemporary print art scene and explore the historical development of print art in the city. From historical lithography and letterpress printing introduced by western missionaries, to printmaking creations by contemporary local artists, IMPACT 11 will showcase the unique print art of Hong Kong and provide insight into its hybrid roots.

Hong Kong’s bicultural identity and historic role as an international hub has played a major part in shaping the development and aesthetics of local print art. During IMPACT 11, more than a hundred years of local printmaking history will be unpacked through exhibitions, workshops, thesis presentations and seminars. The conference will also serve as a platform where local and international graphic art lovers, scholars, printmakers and the public come together to explore, encounter and exchange ideas. Bringing international experts from the global art community to events staged throughout the whole of Hong Kong, IMPACT 11 will transform the city into a hub of print art and be a flagship art event for 2020.

Conference location: Hong Kong
For more information and bookings go to the conference website.

IMC2020: Sumi-Fusion

International Mokuhanga Conference
18 to 22 November 2020

Nara is renowned today as a center of production for the finest sumi ink. This fourth convening of the International Mokuhanga Conference, titled Sumi-Fusion, will celebrate the versatility of sumi in woodblock printing, both historically and in contemporary applications across Japan and abroad. Additionally, it will explore the presence of black, and how it relates to color.

Lying at the easternmost end of the Silk Road, Nara was a meeting point where artisans, monks, merchants and literati from China, Korea and India mingled with the citizens of the ancient capital. And it was here, with the refinement of available materials for its production, that woodblock printmaking became an important medium of communication.

IMC2020 will combine a look at Nara’s role in the development of mokuhanga while spotlighting its contemporary fusions: its relevance today, its globalizing future, and its ever-growing interest among new generations of art students, crafts-people, artists and academics.

IMC2020 will be designed around exhibitions, discussions, demonstrations and academic presentations that reflect the diversity of interests and approaches to mokuhanga within the wider disciplinary world of print-media and contemporary art.

Conference location: Naru, Japan

International Print Run

Taking - and giving - SA printmaking to the world.

The 2018/19 Folio Project

... is in the throes of being completed... yay!

Curator Simone Tippett has booked one-on-one sessions with conservator Karen Vidler to workshop the archival binding of the prints into beautiful book folios.

Participating artists are encouraged to take one of the remaining book folios with them on their travels overseas as gifts to other printmakers, studios and art communities. This gift is one of the defining reasons for the International Print Run project - to spread generosity and make friendships and connections with other artists and communities around the world.

Have you seen the #yellowclaybus?

You may have noticed #yellowclaybus popping up on social media. Or maybe you've been lucky enough to find a real little bus, somewhere on the street...

This fabulous art activism project was started by pottery teacher Michele Nooteboom of Wakefield Potters, Morphett Vale.

In the process of discovering that Wakefield Potters' big kiln was 'not able to be repaired', the pottery studio was also declared 'not up to code' as it was originally built as a bus shelter. (Excellent use of a bus shelter! -Ed.)

Add Mary Pulford and the enthusiasm of 60 students (many of whom are kids) and the #yellowclaybus project started. Approximately 250 tiny yellow buses have been made so far... appearing anywhere from local to interstate and overseas locations. Search #yellowclaybus on Insta for a most marvellous series of snaps.

So, while Wakefield Potters have a long wait for their paperwork to be approved, and some fundraising work ahead of them for a lovely new kiln, classes are continuing and the #yellowclaybus keeps on keeping on...

Worthy Causes
     ... Bushfire Fundraiser

Julie Paterson
Fundraiser for Kangaroo Island Wildlife
You might have heard of the fabulous Julie Paterson of ClothBound, the Imperfect Workshops and the Imperfect Manifesto fame? Julie designed this fabric for the Southern Oceans Lodge on Kangaroo Island a while back. The Lodge was destroyed in the awful fires earlier this year. Julie is
dedicating all profits from the current sales of the fabric to funding native animal rescues by the Kangaroo Island Wildlife Network. Good stuff.
Click for more about Julie and her ripper TED talk.
Please consider supporting the fundraiser by buying youself a treat :)

[PS, if your budget is tight, why not help by spreading the word... And if a friend makes some lovely cushions from the fabric, you could christen them with a special Happy Hour. So many great ways to support a good cause :) -Ed!]

[Again, if your budget is tight, please help by spreading the word, both in terms of donations and applying for residencies... Sorayya and Geoff are sincerely determined to make the world a better place. So excited about this Foundation. They are good people with a beautiful vision. -Ed]
