March Donation Drive. The Children & Families and Youth Ministries are partnering this month to collect clothes for the children and village friends of Comet House in Kikuyu, Kenya. Comet House is one of our ministry partners and was created as a way to change the poverty cycle in Kikuyu through education. It provides a safe place for children to live while also giving them access to good schools. Our Youth Ministry is sending a team over in June to visit Comet House and help the Comet School prepare for more children. The children there are in great need of both clothing and shoes. Please bring gently used or new clothing for children and teens, boys and girls, ages 0 to 18. During the month of March, we will have bins in the reception area, Children and Families Area (Sphere) and in the Youth area (Underground) where you can drop off donations. Thanks for partnering with us to show love around the world!
The Reconciliation Task Force presents the 5th Sunday combined Discipleship class with Dr. Ansley Quiros. Dr. Quiros, an Atlanta native, is a historian of the twentieth-century United States, with a focus on race, politics and religion. Her first book, God With Us: Lived Theology and the Black Freedom Struggle in Americus, Georgia, 1942-1976 (UNC, 2018) examines the struggle over race and Christian theology in Southwest Georgia.  Dr. Quiros will be teaching at a combined Discipleship class at 10:15 a.m. on Sunday, March 29.  Covering topics such as church integration, kneel-ins and sit-ins, Americus GA, the Cotton Patch Gospel, Martin Luther King, Jr., Koinonia Farm, Habitat for Humanity and the connections between them, this is a great opportunity to learn from our history.  Dr. Quiros is the sister-in-law of our former Associate Pastor Rev. Jeff Meyers.  She regularly speaks to church groups on racial reconciliation and the Gospel.
Montgomery Trip. The Reconciliation Task Force would like to invite the North Avenue Family on an educational trip to Montgomery, Alabama on Saturday, April 18,  to attend the Legacy Museum & the National Memorial for Peace & Justice.  The museum, located in a former warehouse where Africans were forcibly sold into slavery, uses “interactive media, sculpture, video, etc.,” to guide visitors on the journey of African enslavement to Mass Incarceration in America. Prices are: $50 for Individuals, $90 for couples and $120 for families and include bus transportation, museum admission, and lunch. Our journey begins at 9 a.m. and will end approximately at 6 p.m. This all-day trip is best suited for children over the age of 12. Women's Retreat - For an army, to retreat is to “withdraw from enemy forces as a result of their superior power, or after a defeat.”  As a noun it is defined as, “an act of moving back or withdrawing.”  Originated in the Latin, “retrahere” retreat is both movement and place, a seeking of safety and a finding of safe place.

This year, the women of the church (and their friends, sisters, neighbors) are invited to retreat to the mountains for a time of relationship-building and tender care while we explore a difficult topic in an encouraging fellowship of fellow followers of Jesus.  We will be exploring forgiveness, considering it from the perspective of forgiving others, seeking forgiveness from others and forgiving ourselves.

For this topic, retreat seems like the perfect word.  In order to have space and time and energy to attend to the multiple layers and meanings of forgiveness, we need to withdraw from the forces around us that seem to overpower us, in order to be empowered by God’s Word to us.  Forgiveness begins and ends with finding our identity within the heart of God.  Come be renewed and refreshed in that identity.
