Buongiorno ~

In the mere 30 days since my Note on extending the hours of Library 1821 to six full days per week, for tastings and purchases of distinguished previous vintages from our cellar and select new releases, the jury for the 2020 Virginia Governor’s Cup has identified two such wines of ours for the Governor’s Case, among the 12 finest Gold Medal wines in the competition. You may be sure, they are now presented by Library 1821, alongside current vintages of both wines.

To the Double Gold Medal reported in that previous note, which the San Francisco Chronicle Competition bestowed on Vermentino Reserve 2018, the Governor’s Cup jury added its Gold Medal selection for the Governor’s Case, the third time in eight vintages our Vermentino has been so honored. At the same time, the jury reached back to a previous vintage of Octagon, 2014, to bring into the Governor’s Case a wine rated at 96 Points by James Suckling and the recipient, in 2018, of the Gold Medal from both the Virginia Governor’s Cup and San Francisco Chronicle competitions.

We love these wines because of their profound depiction of where they are grown. The photo to your right shows us pruning one-year-old vines of Merlot this week, in 5.5 acres we’ve dedicated to Octagon on Goodlow Mountain. We sent another vintage of Octagon to the Governor’s Cup competition this year, two vintages away from being released and scarcely two years off the vine, the 2017. Something shone through already of that radiant vintage year, and it won its first Gold Medal recognition. Every gesture counts, as much as wise restraint. These slopes have never known a discontented cluster of Vermentino.

Each of these Governor’s Case wines will appear in our most exciting feasts on Palladio Restaurant’s Calendar for Winter and Spring. On Saturday, March 14th, we welcome Chef Robert Wiedmaier of Washington, DC, founder and chef celebrating 21 years at Marcel’s, and head of a stunning galaxy of highly awarded restaurants in the vicinity, including the Michelin-starred Siren, at Logan Circle. The main course for the March 14th feast, his classic presentation of Boudin Blanc, will take one’s breath away with Cabernet Franc Reserve 2007 from magnum and Octagon 2014.

On Saturday, April 25th, one of our most joyous culinary traditions, the annual Evening with Morels, will present the 2018 Vermentino Reserve along with Allegrante 2019, in support of an exuberant salad of Spring Greens with marinated morels, caramelized ramp bulbs, poached white asparagus, and grilled green asparagus in a ramp green vinaigrette. For each date, please call Palladio, (540) 832-7848 to reserve.

I'm happy to say, our 2020 Annual Newsletter is available and posted at our website. We hope it will help to guide your own calendar of visits to the estate this year. The time has never been better.

 Cordialmente ~
