We'll Just Leap This Here: Nominations for City Employee of the Year are Now Open
Guess what, folks? It's a leap year, meaning we get the gift of another day...literally. Existing on February 29 is like putting a dollar in the quarter machine at the arcade and having it spit out five quarters. You're getting an unexpected bonus. A little extension of your time. An extra sheet to thrillingly rip off your one-a-day calendar in celebration of our realignment to the sun.
Make the most of your surplus Saturday by submitting a nomination for the 2019 City of Falls Church Employee of the Year. What makes a good Employee of the Year? Here's a quick rundown of nomination criteria:
- Achieving an accomplishment of outstanding worth in advancing and improving public service in the City of Falls Church.
- There must be tangible results gained from their performance, such as higher morale, more effective operations, lower costs, or acts beyond the call of duty.
- Their achievement should be remarkable, or simply put they just went above and beyond their assigned duties.
- Their accomplishment must have occurred in 2019.
Need some further inspiration? Here are some past winners of the award:
- Last year, Carly Aubrey, Senior Planner with the Community Planning and Economic Development Services team, was selected as the 2018 Employee of the Year due to her exemplary work taking on project management responsibilities for the West Falls Church Economic Development Project.
- The 2016 Employee of the Year was Public Works Crew Leader Joe Dowling, who was chosen based on his exceptional work during Winter Storm Jonas, his leadership with creating a mini-park on Rolling Road, and his tireless work at special events, such as the Memorial Day Parade and Festival.
- Let's take it back a decade. Environmental Programs Specialist Kathy Allan received the 2010 Employee of the Year award thanks to her leading role in saving the City six-figures worth of solid waste services each year, while at the same time bringing trash and recycling carts to curbside customers. Flash forward to 2020, and you'll still find Kathy at the Property Yard, just now as the Assistant Superintendent of Operations.
Have someone in mind? Great, get to nominating, because submissions are due by 4:30 p.m. next Friday, March 13. Get all the details on how to submit a nomination, the eligibility process, and the full selection process by visiting www.fallschurchva.gov/EOY.

WMATA Metro station parking lot closures are coming our way.
Starting March 15, the East Falls Church Metro station parking lot will be completely closed to the public and parking at West Falls Church station will be reduced by half. These closures are related to pre-construction activity to support the platform-rebuilding project, which will include the East Falls Church station closing for the summer (beginning Memorial Day).
Last week's Focus had tips for dealing with the closures, but the WMATA website is the place to check for the latest news.
