2020 brings us a new decade, a leap year and lots of opportunity to connect share and learn. 2020 also brings an expanded Networks of Expertise in Auckland with the appointment of Marie Hirst. Marie is a skilled and knowledgeable educator with many years experience working with schools from Years 0-8.

Save the days
I have compiled a calendar of events for teachers and students. Check out the list, add dates to your diary and  please let me know if you have things to add.
  • First up on the AMA calendar is the Term 1 Saturday Morning and AGM, March 21. This is your chance to get up to the minute information from Rob Mill & Lauren Burr, MoE, about the NCEA changes and have your say on the future of maths & stats education in Auckland. Light refreshments will be provided followed by a range of workshops and discussion groups to attend.
  • The Primary Maths Association bring us their famous seminar day on pi day, March 14th at Waipuna Conference Centre. Check here for information and links to the programme and registration details.
  • March 14 is also now recognised as International day of Mathematics  This years theme is Maths is everywhere

Digital Assessment
NZQA have been trialing digital assessments over the past few years. This year they are including

  • AS91262 – Apply calculus methods in solving problems
  •  AS91586 – Apply probability distributions in solving problems.

To assist the development of these online assessments NZQA is surveying mathematics and statistics teachers to find out what  digital tools or APPS  they are using with their students in their Level 2 & 3 classes. NZQA would appreciate teachers completing this short surveyThe survey is open until  9:00am Monday 2nd March

Curriculum Integration
This is a topic of conversation in many schools and being implemented in others. NZCER researchers released a report late last year that explored  teachers’ rationales for curriculum integration; the approaches and practices used to integrate curriculum; and the learning opportunities such approaches provide for students. The report can be accessed here

On the web: The physics of Fog
While the weather conditions that lead to the formation of fog are usually quite benign, fog itself can be very disruptive. The aviation and marine industries are often interested in how fog or mist will affect their schedules. Scroll towards to the bottom of the post to find two frequency distributions comparing fog at Hamilton and Wellington airports.

Short notice
Do you know any Year 13 girls who would be interested in the School to Skies programme, a Tech and Aviation Camp being held in Auckland April 18-25. Application close 5pm March 2nd
